I'm considering picking one of these up but I wondered if someone could explain how they differ? Although I'm certainly old enough to remember the original Elite and Wing Commander first time round, I never played either of them. Yes, I'm one of those few weirdos that never played Elite as a kid.

The deciding factor might be which plays better with a gamepad as I wouldn't be buying a proper stick.

They're both different monsters, can't really compare them in my opinion.  SC is a massive undertaking which goes far beyond of "just" a space flight game.

Also, SC is planned to be controller agnostic as can be read here.  So any control mechanism will function similarly to others.

I'll leave Elite to Albert, or some of the other lads who play it.

If I have to be honest, read their web site forums as the opinions are so strong on both of these it doesn't make it worth having another Elite vs Star Citizen battle.

From my side I've bought into both of them. If you want a game to play in space now, Elite is ready but buy it before release as it's cheaper.

Start Citizen should be epic...in a year. And there's no obligation to pledge to play before it does get released so in the end there is only one game out of the two actually ready to play.

I'd say it depends on when you want to play.  ED is out mid December, the persistent universe (mmo and coop parts of Star Citizen) will not even be released as alpha until Q4 2015 (the single player FPS part of SC should be released in Q3/4 2015).

They are different beats as had been pointed out, but I'd say the release dates are more relevant to your question today.

It was never intended as a "battle". I thought I'd be safe posting such a request on a site of older gamers. I also wasn't aware that SC was so far from release so that makes my mind up anyway. Thanks for the info.

Sorry I wasn't being critical there. Seems any time on any site these 2 games get mentioned it generates a wave of emotion. As you said, they are games that will release 2 years apart.

Like Albert, I've bought into both.
