Cheat Scanner

Running a clan is a difficult job and BOD have their work cut out doing it, just the same as Admins here do too.  Every now and then, things done with the best intentions will without warning jump up and bite you in the backside and chew your TANGO off down to your knees.

BOD have clearly had a problem with players (not necessarily members) cheating in the past and felt it necessary to implement a system to try to stop it.  In my personal opinion the decision to use an IRC-based scanning tool is a misguided one, but given that they had made the decision to use it then a ban following a positive scan is innevitable.  So the decision to ban someone is not something that you can debate or abhor, they used a system, the system said cheat, the ban is therefore correct.  It was the choice of tool that was poor, not the process.

You can argue over style all you want - admittedly dMw would not have 'styled' either the 'banned' or 'unbanned' announcement in the way that BOD did, but then they are BOD with a scanning process and we are dMw without.

I am sure that Neth in their own forums will offer public apologies to Rambo and so the announcement above can be viewed as slighty out of context to that extent.  You have to remember that they have a clan to run that uses a scanning system and that they get mor e'publics' on their server than we do on ours.  In those circumstances they cannot have a anti-cheat process that says "we'll ban you if you scan positive, unless you complain, in which case we'll unban you".  So to a certain extent I can understand their wording even if I would not have worded it that way myself.  They had to make sure that players felt the process/system would remain strong and be enforced.

Irrespective of the above, I would urge some restraint when flaming and generally condemning the BOD leadership as the wording I am sure was rushed out to solve a realised problem and is therefore not well prepared or styled.  As we can all commit such faux pas then perhaps we should not throw the stones too harshly as we live in a glass house and might find ourselves the target some day.

My personal hope is that BOD review their anti-cheat process.  If the scan is known to produce false positives (as I reflected earlier in the thread) then I would stop using it immediately and look for a better alternative.

dMw looked at anti-cheat tools and none of them ever really stacked up against the best anti-cheat system we ever used: T.R.U.S.T.

dMw is a members' community and the trust we share is what gives us our security.

Long Live dMw!

Out of pure curiosity i had a peak at my firewall log after i had installed mirc for the sole purpose of getting what i thought was a compulsory scan and amongst the myriad of irc based alerts i found this...
A computer at irc.dal.net  has attempted an unsolicited connection to TCP port 3128 on your computer.
TCP port 3128 is commonly used by the "RingZero" service or program. The source computer has scanned your computer for this trojan, but it has been blocked by your firewall.

I thought i had only connected to quakenet and have no idea how dalnet is involved. Needless to say mirc has now been uninstalled as i have no idea how it works anymore (never really knew much in the first place just how to protect chat rooms from bots and other scripts )

I also am with Blunt and TL and on a side note last night i was accused of being a cheater a hax0r and a no0b cos i killed  one of BoD s regulars a few rounds in a row(not tagged but a reg) who must be pretty terrible at cz if they thought i was hacking. I was  using my comedy name as i dont wear my tags when extremely drunk or on their FUN server (thats an experience in itself as fun imho doesnt involve 17 cts bullying 12 terros on azzy going 7 rounds to nil up and when the teams being unbalanced being pointed out getting an afk ct transferred to terro  ) but I took exception at this and did the manly thing.... added my tags then ran away to another server  :pinch: .I dont know how some of the better players can put up with the constant whining. It seems as said elsewhere before that the cs kiddies are migrating to cz and spoiling what was more grown up gaming on most cz servers.

I know what you mean Scot. It seems that some people have allready written down my SteamID and when I play by another name they allready know it's me.
Also my teamobjective attitude allways keeps popping up.
First when I played a couple of times with another name and got acused of hacking and then turned on my normal name they'd just didn't say anything anymore. Just have a laugh about it. That's what I do.

BTW: we also use mIRC for Clanmatches and so and for dMw-tournaments.

Ignore the 3128 port, a lot of IRC networks scan people for them using open proxy's to connect to their networks in order to stop anonymous people from connecting to their servers, that was probably what it was scanning.

As far never been to dalnet, i'd guess this would probably be a mistake as I do believe mIRC has 'connect on startup' enabled as default, maybe dalnet was default server too, quite possible and nothing to worry.

Or possibly another piece of software joining you to the dalnet servers without you knowing,  in the past I used to know of 1 piece of software (AIM I think) that had chat rooms options but didn't make it clear that the chat rooms you were joining were just standard chatrooms that you could easily join via mIRC.

All in all no panic. ;)

Well that people start calling you a cheater on the BoD fun server isn't new. They do it as soon as a player gets a good score.
But i find it funny as i get accused much on that server as you already know i think ;)  But then they think they are talking to a admin about me but it is me who is the admin

And yes you see much more kids playing CZ these days and we all know how kids are

Rambo

lol i have been there when that happens ice its so funny m8 keep it up :P :roflmao:  :roflmao:

scot

Yes  Ice you do get called all of the below a lot more than me thats why when you play with your other names i always call you ice... keeps em guessing.    As for the cheating hax0r no0b bit it was on the reaper that this happened had it been the funserver i woulda understood but coming from a reg on the Grim reaper i was kinda taken aback    I personally wouldnt dream of calling someone who pwned me a no0b as more than likely they are  a better player and therefore probably much more experienced than me, but like you say kids will be kids and i think the person in question is just that

Thanks for the info jb   much appreciated, the connect on startup probably explains it. Was just a bit worried that they mighta been lookin for a trojan to exploit

y'know, I've heard (and made) this sort of comment a lot over the years I've been playing CS... I wonder if it's more immature players buying games and joining in, orwhether it's just that those of us in the "mature" gamers camp are just getting old

What we mean is the attitude, some kids are more grown up than others. Your age doesnt matter its the attitude you show towards other people thats important. You can be young but mature, you could be old and immature.

im alittle late to replying to this post, havent been on the forums for a few days, but id like to have a little say

first of all i cant even believe they thought Rambo cheated, hes been a regular for sometime now, all you have to do is watch the way he plays and there nothing at all dodgy going on , surely the admin watch players in the server, im always flicking through players, not to see if they hax just to to see there tatics and learn from different things.

I just can never get my head around why people even cheat in the first place, cant they use there brains? I knew someone who would never cheat online but offline games first thing he got on first person games where godlike , unlimitted ammo ect.. Im like what a waste of £30 for a game.  I just dont understand some people...  Few nights ago  i was on a server , someone joined and next min we all all being knifed at spawn and dieing instantly......... They got banned fairly fast but i mean what was the point.

They all must be very new to the game and just want to prat about... Kids like you say.

 :withstupid:

Rambo was DEFINATELY not cheating but the cheat scanner picked it up so that's fair enough IMO. He's cleared his name now though so it's alright...

The only time I have ever used cheats is when playing serious sam 2 on Impossible mode and with Buttafacio on my side. This is only because when it says impossible it means impossible!

So we stuck infinate amount of respawns as well as guns and ammo. Was a good laugh but thats a bit of fun offline just travelling through the whole game. Would never dream of doing it online or against other people though.
