Two definitions of two different things. So what is an opinion? Clearly something held to be true but not substantiated by fact. Beliefs however are held to be true but are based on facts or perceived facts.

Therefore one can believe the capital of France is Paris and that the capital of Germany is Bonn. As illustrated beliefs can be wrong, as Paris is indeed the capital of France but Berlin and not Bonn, is now the capital of unified Germany.

Expressed opinion is exactly that, an idea not based on fact but on feeling. Opinions cannot therefore be held to be right or wrong. They are as valid as the holder of those opinions decides they are.

Is green a nicer colour than blue? We can each have an opinion, but  there is no exact right or wrong. Blue is not measurably nicer than green and no matter how much one likes green it doesn't mean that someone who likes blue is wrong.

So it is with Arts. You cannot quantify art. There is no best piece of music, no best painting.
Many would state that The Godfather is the greatest film ever made. By what measure? It did not gross the highest box office ever (Titanic did that!!!). It did not win the most Oscars (Again Titanic, sharing the honour with Ben Hur, at eleven). So how can it be the best? I can't. All it can be is a film that a vocal minority claim as their favourite.

Based on The Oxford English Dictionary  meaning for 'belief' and 'opinion' consider the following.

"In my opinion the Godfather is the greatest film ever made." Fair point.

"I believe the Godfather to be the greatest film ever made." Prove it.

So what of Jimi Hendrix? Is he a great musician?
Did he sell a lot of records? So did the Spice Girls!
Did a lot of people go see him play? A lot of people went to see Take That!

One cannot therefore state as fact that he was or was not a great musician/song writer.

It's your opinion. It's neither universally right nor universally wrong. But it's what you think. It's the result of what his music means to you. Either a lot or nothing at all. No one can tell you opinion is wrong. And neither can you tell someone else their opinion is wrong.

So to suggest my dislike of Jimi Hendrix has no merit is the comment of at the least a misguided soul and at most the ramblings of a intellectual dwarf.

To further argue that my dislike of JH is somehow wrong based on the fact that you think my liking of dance music is also wrong is as ignorant as thinking my liking of the colour blue is wrong based on the fact that my liking of Guinness is also wrong.

Articulating a reasoned argument is harder than having a mindless dig, but I still suggest you give it a go.
