Online sales are suspended I believe.

I've been to my local store a couple of weeks ago (or so) and to be honest the deals are rubbish. Probably why they're in receivership in the first place. They didn't compete.

DarkAngel

You don't get any good deals anymore, they just send them back to their suppliers..... :(

Can we just give a moment of thought for the employees about to lose their jobs before Christmas?

I appreciate how hard done by you must feel not being able to buy stock at firesale prices but a little perspective please  :flirty:

So which is it? You guys are going soft or are you trying to make us feel guilty for seeking out a bargain? or Both?

I didn't run the chain into the ground. I'm not in a position to influence the outcome either. Considering the current owner bought it for two quid what chance do you think it had? Anyone with any salt would have taken that as a warning sign and looked for alternative work. All we're talking about in this thread is discounts not debating the moral objective.

Do either of you shop and support those tax dodging chains Starbucks and Amazon? Do you feel responsible for the millions of unnamed that won't get their weekly handout from the government for sitting on their hands and doing nothing??

Sorry guys. I'm not feeling overly sympathetic today. Don't forget, soap boxes burn.

Bargains are great and I'm first in line for such :D. I negotiate like a demon for stuff I want to buy and enjoy every minute of it. If I can get it cheaper elsewhere I'll get it price-matched or walk away. I don't mind paying good money for a decent product and aren't normally known to underspecify things

I am not suggesting you did run the chain into the ground nor could influence the outcome. They didn't compete, their customer service sucked and they were doomed when pitted against other retailers in similar sectors who are doing just fine. My first point of call would be John Lewis for that kind of white goods market for no other reason than it's a pleasure to shop there and their customer service is second to none. It's one helluva different experience there than at any of the large sheds be it Curry's, Comet, PC World etc.

Either way, that's not the people on the shop floor's fault. Do you really just not give a passing thought about the people being made redundant? Wow.

No soap box oration, just saying it's tough for those losing their jobs. If you *really* have zero compassion for them and don't give a flying fig then dude, I am amazed and am truly sorry bud.

I have zero sympathy for the workshy scroungers in our society but am truly sympathetic to those wanting to work but who can't get jobs or being made redundant. Retail is a tough industry to be in (particuarly now) and it's hard work for relatively little reward. I know as I've done it.

So I'm going soft, sue me. I'm a nice guy (mainly). I employ nice people, work for nice clients and get well paid for it. I'm lucky.

There by the grace of god........

Oh, and Starbucks... no, Amazon yes - but always via the affiliate link :flirty:

The business revolved around selling people more expensive products than they required and then suggesting they get insurance on top. I'd overheard staff lying to customers and had them suddenly remember facts when they realised I'd spent 30 seconds googling a product before going to the store. I can't say I'm sorry to see them go. I understand they were just doing their job but so are those PPI and Accident lawyers and I wouldn't feel in the least bit bad if one of them lost their job either.

I know it doesn't apply to all their staff, but if you disagree with the business model (in the same way with PPI lawyers) and you've had negative experiences, is it obligatory to feel bad now?

Each to their own then eh. I'll feel sorry and spare a thought for people losing their jobs, you don't give a ff, that's your call.

Maybe you'll feel differently when you've have a job and have a family to support, who knows.

I'm still reeling from the news that Sulky agreed with Pen.

Surely a sign that the end times are apon us.

Dude, that's not half as depressing for you as it is for me.

Benny

Wow, there are some bunched panties in here even though the idea of you lot in panties is quite disturbing.

Are we not missing the point, Comet was badly run and was doomed to failure. If people get a bargain at the end of it due to a firesale, great, but there are no grounds to get uppity about there not being any bargains etc. With respect the store staff I would hope that everyone has some sympathy.

I've both been laid off and carried out the laying off, it's not nice however you do it and in this case it's no fault of the workers. It's not about feeling sympathy because you should, it's about having the depth of though to think beyond the rumours and conversations that have been had and decide that this impacts others that may be dependent on those people.

Do I loathe dealing with call centers in India? Yes. Do I wish them all out of work? No, I accept that the way businesses are run is to keep overheads low and maximise margins, Comet do that by selling insurance, banks do that with overseas call centers. The employees within those organisations are just doing their jobs, as are estate agents, solicitors, conveyancers, parking wardens etc.

Don't blame the individuals, blame the society that we are all members of. Insurance wouldn't go up if we weren't all greedy. We all slag off the bankers, but in their situation you'd reap the money as well. Judge not lest ye be judged.

Now if someone can tell me where Benny is I'll give him his login back :)
