Although if two pairs both show the same problem then it sounds more like a software problem.

In XP check

Control panel - Sound Speach & Audio Devices - Change the speaker settings - Speaker Settings/Advanced - Speaker Setup - and set "desktop stereo speakers" or "stereo headphones"

Sheepy you don't actually need the receipt at all. All you need is proof of purchase (which is normally the job of the receipt). So if you bought them with anything other than hard cash then you can provide proof of purchase in the form of your credit card bill, proccessed returned cheque from the bank etc.

Having said that, I think JAS is on the right lines about the mono signal. Check your male jack plug, it should have 2 litle black insulating rings on it if it's a stereo jack and only 1 if it's mono. A mono jack will only give sound to 1 ear if when there's a stereo signal.

Hope it helps.

erm i dont really understand how you can say they arn't working, surely there not mono headphones, god forbid such a thing exists which basically means that the wiring is faulty or your not pushing it in all the way...no pun intended... i have found that in previous cases sometimes there isn't enough space either side of the socket for the headphone jack to fully fit into the card.

Do your speakers have a Headphone socket? you might get a result out of those.

I have to say my sound card is a god send as it has a headphone socket and i can just mute my speakers.

its definatly sterio there r 2 black lines.

i tryed every singe diffrent one on the properties.FBG if i push it in the full way then its seems 2 b a mono signal. 1/2 way out seems 2 short circuit it.
neutron i paid cash, i pay 4 everything case, i dont trust myself with cards.

Have you tried plugging them into another stereo source?

If they're still fubar after you've tried them in your hi-fi for example then they are knackered not your PC.

Is there a chance you have an onboard soundcard installed alongside a PCI card an haven't disabled the onboard in the bios? Funny thing happen when you forget that.  :?
Cheers, Bert

sheepy

99%shure no onboard sound as there r no bits 2 plug the outputs in to allong the mobo.

Sheepy,

Just double check that the soundcard is inserted correctly......remove and put back in again...........if okay then........

Had a similar problem with a hi-fi some time ago...try this with the mains power OFF!!

Take a Johnson's cotton bud, slightly moisten one end and stick it all the way in the jack plug socket....twist clockwise and counterclockwise and remove...then put in the dry end and again twist clockwise and counterwise......you might see lots of nasty dust and grime specks covering the cotton bud??....if really bad repeat the process again with another cotton bud.

Turn power back on and insert headphones again and see if they now work?.......I know mine did and it's worth a try.

Today i bought a splitter for my sound as when i need to switch to headphones (when missus goes to bed) i dont have to start crawling around on the floor, i also bought 2 3 1/2mm jack extensions and screwed them to the underside of my desk with a metal plate and hey presto no more crawling around ao all i need to do is switch the speakers off and connect headphones. anyway back to the point when i connected it for the first time i only had sound in one ear, it was just down to the jack plug not being pushed in far enough...so give it a good ramming :D  :D
Or i suggest buying a splitter aswell and see if that works as it sounds like the jack plug is the problem all it may need is a bit more girth as missus keeps saying :D  :D

smilodon

If your in the market for new headphones you might try Microsoft  Sidewinder Game Voice. You plug the speakers into a pad and can switch between speakers and headphones without having to plug or unplug anything.  However the headphones are a bit flimsy and all the xtra buttons are pointless...in fact it's crap...don't buy it

Already got some snd they come with plantronics headset as i noticed last night. but i never liked it so i just left the other bit off.

I use them to, PC world were doing a two for one deal so old the other set on. I don't bother with the hockey puck bit and just plug the headphones straight into the soundcard. They work fine and are nice and clear.
