With the near release of Special Forces. what is the general opinion on it.

Personal I don't think we need it. I know what happened to CS when you have different flavours of a game to choose from. It splits the few players you have over different servers. weakening the core game. And it smacks of cashing in by EA, The original game has only been out 4 months. :ranting:

Liberator

As an official addon I don't think it will suffer from the same problems.

I also believe that the majority of people who bought and actively play the game, will buy the addon. EA will score a coup here, get them while they are still hooked.

Even so, the proof is in the pudding, thats why I vote for a BF2:SF night and gauge the popularity.

We don't want to lose our newly found and deeply valued additional members.

Oh, and I suppose we don't want to lose the -=dMw=-BIG guys as well. :P

Doorman

I'm a 'going to see how it goes'. I'm not enamoured with the idea that EA sees us as suckers for another 20 quids worth! As I said somewhere else on this forum, it's BF2 in the dark. Don't see a long term appeal really.

DuVeL

I'm going to see how it goes.

I've been reading the |TG|site aswell and they are suggesting a free MOD that is out. Also some in |TG| think they shouldn't get it (SF that is).

For me, I'll stick to normal BF2 first and get better in that.

Well, you can argue that BF2 should have included all of this SF stuff from the beginning, and that EA is a big bad company only out for our money, but either case I see SF as more armies + more weapons + more infantry maps = FUN!!!  :dribble:

So I'm going to buy it, and I doubt whether I'll be playing the original much more once I have it. I'm already growing a little tired from all the chinese maps, since I didn't find them very interesting to start with.

So I voted for the server to get up and running...

Also I don't quite get the argument 'it's BF2 in the dark'???

(re: EA stiffing us) LOL - but sorry - how can you argue that?

The only way you can critisise EA/DICE on this level is the whole fiasco over the 1.01 patch!

'Special Forces' is clearly 'added value' - the basic BF2 game is designed as it was designed with a fully functioning and excellent combat/forces system.

Taking this line of arguement you cauld say that ANT add-on/expansion to any game should been included in the original - that's just crazy!

...Anyway - aside from this rant (sorry!) I agree with you that more stuff equals fun! :)

And I don't see it as 'BF2 in the dark' - The new maps - specially designed to simulate anti-terrorist and special forces operations make this more than justy BF2 with the lighting turned off!

Yes, the night mode is important - but that's only because it fairly reflects REAL Special Forces modes of opperation.

The Chinese maps have always had a bad press in my book - yet they are actually graphically more rich than the MEC ones (bit a smidgen). BUT it seems that the middle-eastern maps are the fashion because of current world events (which is why insurgents have been brought in in Special Forces)...

Personally I would have liked to have seen a Balkans/Chechnia based urban enviroment - the sunny desert maps get you down after a while!

Finally, as to not playing teh basic BF2 once SF comes out - well, could we really do without our Karklan fix? Er, I think not!

LOL

(Sorry about the rant at the begining mate!)

Don't know if it'll be that urban, but will the Ukraine do?

Point of Existence BF2 mod.

Oh, and I probably won't be buying the SF expansion right off.  BF2 has only been out a couple of months, and still has bugs in it.  I don't really fancy paying again for a good while yet for the privilege(?) of being a beta tester for EA/Dice.  So I'll wait and see if you lot find it any good, and it becomes a community favourite, before I part with my hard-earned.

:withstupid:
I will probably splash out on this mod, but possibly only after it's been out a while. I remember the road to rome mod for bf1942 and how everyone I knew who got it said what a waste of money that turned out to be. Desert combat turned out to be the winner there. It's understandable that EA want to make a bit more cash out of you given the cost of developing these games! Slapping on an addon like SF is far less demanding than creating BF2 from scratch.

I agree with the splitting the numbers sentiment, so I'm more inclined to wait and see what happens before making any judgement. Maybe run a SF server  one or two nights a week alongside the standard bf2 server to allow for those who want it, keep it off the rest of the time, and see if demand increases or not?

No need to apologize mate, but I do think you've misunderstood my point about the EA ripping us off thing. I personally wouldn't argue that I would feel ripped off after buying this addon. I was sort of refering to some of the other posts, rather than stating my own opinion.
As Delan and I talked about, BF2 would have been a completely different game if SF was included from the beginning, and that may not have been the goal for EA, and perhaps not the taste of the masses. I think that most of the lot at dMw are much more interested in the tactical infantry part of the game than the average player though, and SF seems like the perfect thing?!?

I agree that the chinese maps are beautiful and all that, but there's something about them that just doesn't make me tick... Some east european urban environments, as you suggest, would be cool. The middle eastern theme does get kind of tedious at times...

I didn't say that I would never play plain BF2 again once SF is out, because you're right: We couldn't do without Karkand...  ;)

i think that this addon will be a winner. sure its bf2 in the dark but hey that makes flying choppers even more fun :D
and things do go bump in the night :narnar:

I'm looking forward to it, and I've voted for having the SF on a few days of the week, but I don't want the regulars not to be there, perhaps try it for 1 or 2 days to start with.

I guess it really depends on how many of us are buying SF? You need quite a few players using it to have a decent game ie 5 v 5.

Lets see how the game is received. I'll playtest it on the ranked servers anyhow as I'm sure Ranger will.

But you can't beat playing the dMw way for me - especially karkland, mashtuur etc

Of course we need people to play it, otherwise where would the fun be? I think Ranger and I would grow tired really fast from running around killing each other  :P But if everybody just sits back and wait for others to buy it and try it, no one, but a few, ever will. It's like the dwindling numbers on dMw server topic.

I agree with you about the dMw way. That's why I'm here, as is the case with most people here, I suppose. My guess is that SF will come with maps of precisely that type. So perhaps it's not exactly Karkand, but something similar. That's my impression anyways...

I'd personally prefer the server to run primarily SF and two - three nights a week run basic BF2...
