Just starting this thread off as I (and Dewey) recieved our copies yesterday...

Unfortunately neither of us were able to have a go as he had a badmington match and I was involved in an epic Karkand on the dMw server!

:)

One thing that is worth telling you though (because I thought it was funny) is that I dropped Dewey right in it at lunch yesterday by telling his missus that we had got 'CoD2' and that we intended playing it all through the Xmas holidays!

"Oh you do do you?" She said looking menacingly at Dewey!

He kinda just melted!

 :lmfao:

Looking forward to having a go though ~ especially the British and Russian theatres (the US ones leave me a bit cold as we've been there and done that with the first 'CoD').

I would have loved to have show this to my Dad - who was in the 8th Army! LOL ~ He would have found something wrong I bet!

:)

(He was a corporal - so thought he knew as much as Monty! LOL)

nice one  :worshippy:

theres  one thing i always do (being married as well) put all games on the visa , cause she doesnt see the bill, and then hide the game in my cd folder and bin the case

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

Dewey

Jo doesn't mind me playing games as long as I spend quality time with her too, which is fine with me, its a good compromise. Now i've got her mobile on the wireless network she goes online nearly as much as I do on ebay etc  :D

Had a quick 15 mins on COD2, nice graphics, similar to the 1st one, but we'll see how it goes... oh and I'm starting on HARD, as it seems the games over in around 8 hours so I want my money's worth  :)

Hippy

Played CoD2 on one of the xbox360 demo stands in my lunch break. Got enthralled in it. ended up being late. nevermind it was worth it.

Only down fall was the silly 360 pad...i kept trying to strafe with my index finger and hit the 'throw smoke grenade' button a few times.... dunno if it'll play as sweetly on my rig, only using a 9800pro.

Ranger

Quicky first impressions...

Was able to have a 45 minutes tonight on CoD2 while the kids were having tea!

Graphics are nice enough - maps and scenery are terrific (as you might expect for a set piece game).

The Russian introductory senario is quite exciting ~ at one point you get attacked by waves of Germans...Great fun to hold out!

(I have set the difficulty to 'Hardened' ~ second hardest. And I think that is a fair difficulty if you want a challenge.)

Play is really a sort of basic puzzle solving set in a linear narrative...

You soon work out the best way to approach a problem ~ as believe me, a lot of teh time it is literally all about how you APPROACH a problem that gets you through.

Always be cautious and use grenades before you enter ANY building and you won't go far wrong.

Choosing which weapon to use at what time is another important part of the ~ use teh rifle for ranged stuff (try to keep teh enemy at a diustance where possible ~ and use teh smgs when you have no choice but to go in close (trenches and bunkers).

USE THE SMOKE GRENADE A LOT!

Its early to say yet what I think about the narrative, single player game (I will mainly playing that over Xmas) ~ but I will be interested to see how the multiplayer goes.

Don't know how the server system works yet or how we could meet online (if anyone is interested).

SO far ***/***** ~ but it's early days.

Watch out for the sniping section with the Russians on that setting as the Jerries frequently get in the building before you can take out the machine gunners.....it gets a bit frantic!!

I know you said you didn't fancy the Amercians again but just so you know one of the best parts of the game is the American beach landing and what happens once you get to the top of the cliff.....I'll say no more  :D

Oh, and the hill assault should test your mettle

Online is a far different game and is more difficult than COD but the scenery is superb.

Until the new year you could meet here

Will have to set up my Nostromo first! (...And my Voice Buddy if we get that sorted this week!

Even more controls to remember than normal...

But it looks like it will be fun with multiplayer ~ plenty of new weapons to play with!

Like my .303 Enfield!

And teh smoke grenades are superb in CoD2 ~ wish we had these in BF2! Actually worek the way they should and really do give cover!

:)

You'll like it Ron...

I think you have to accept ~ whatever marketing bumph developers try and sell you about these scenery based linear narrative FPSs ~ that there will be a little repitition and sense of having to follow a set path through the game...

[Unlink non-linear games like BF2 where you are free to explore the map at will ~ the trade off is that people will say; BF2, terrific multiplayer, crap single player - and with CoD2; so-so mulitplayer, terrific single player!]

However, CoD2 does make quite an effort to make your 'tour' through their scenery an enjoyable one by making the 'sets' really atmospheric.

Dewey and I both found the Russian introductory senario a bit of a 'wow' ~ especially the moment when, while you are hiding in a trench, a squadron of German tanks rumbles over the top of you! (You just have to cower at the bottom of your hole!)

Fantastic!

The British desert campaign is nice because you get to play with the British weaponary, Enfield, Bren and Thompson ~ although (on a technical note) this is the one area where the developers have 'skimped' as the 8th Army mostly had the 1928 version of the Thopmson - the one you see in the gangster movies - while the US Army had the newer A1 version that is represented in teh game. It seems like making one model of this was enough for the developers ~ Small niggle!

This was my Dad's favourite weapon - mainly because he was a fan of 1920/30 American ganster movies with Cagney in them! (A bit like Prvate Pike in 'Dad's Army'!)

:)

The one other ommission (so far) that I am disappointed at is the lack of the British .303 Vickers machine gun. This had an iconic place in the campaign ~ and certainly was one of the best infantry machine guns of the war. I was looking forward to holding a sandbagged emplacement with a the Vicky = 'Raaa-tttaaaa-tat-tat-tat!'

(Instead we have to make do with the German MG42.)

Get it Ron ~ You'll have fun...Though don't expect it to be as long lived as BF2 (unless the multiplayer DOES turn out to be OK).

;)

...Got to the American senario - D-Day action!

Taking the German bunkers is fun, and some nice fighting over the farm walls and narrow lanes.

So far I think the best senarios are:

1) Russion Front (These are just superb - the house to house fighting is amazing!)

2) American D-Day Senario - Taking the beachhead bunkers is great

3) North Africa - all together disappointed with the British senario. I realize they are trying to gice you a complete change of scene - But I would have preferred a British senario that centered around either a Commando raid OR, best of all, the Parachute Brigade attacks on the German radar installations in Normandy, and Pegasus Bridge.

I am disappointed we don't have a Mk. 5 Sten (but they have cheated and used the same Thompson that they use in the American senarios)...And the Red Berets missions were highly crucial to the sucess of teh D-Day invasion.

(Incidently, the Americans will always tell you that the crucial action on D-Day was the one shown in the American senario of CoD2 - Pointe du Hoc, the attack on the German heavy guns...In actual fact the Parachute Brigade's attack on the German radar that same day, is as important (and probably more so) as it was this radar that was the 'eyes' of the German high command. The fact that the guns were not even at the Pointe du Hoc reduced the success of the Ranger's mission, while the Britsh Para mission was a complete success and effectively 'blinded' the Germans in this area.)

But - as I said - they wanted a bit of desert to give some variety to the maps. Ah well.
