Well they hit us with a bombshell last night. Cisco are binning our office.
So from July 1st I'll need another job. We have been undercut by a comapny in the Phillipines who can work a case for $29 and have 2 people working on it and they will works several shifts from 8am till midnight their time which covers ours and the Oz tac's shifts so they will be going as well.

If I ever get the push I'm going into the 'Gaming LAN' business.

Take I15 for example. 600+ punters all paying Â£60 for a weekends gaming.

Now there's an idea GFK. Maybe you can accquire a few switches before you go and get together with Oldie, set up some game servers, hire a local hall at weekends and sell places to punters? :idea: :?:
Though I suppose you'd have to canvas the local populace first to see if there would be any interest? :?

if u are really serious about doing that then i have a few contacts through the MPUK forums, they also support up and comming lans with advice and advertisment. although there would b a HUGE start up capital. ud have to buy servers switches miles of cables etc.

The interesting part would be convincing the bank for a loan for the first event. Ok so the figures add up, problem is the peeps holding the purse strings are so tech challenged.......

i would b willing to go in with u on some of the capital as i have a bit of savings, not much tho

also as i have been to the events and being an active member of the mpuk forums i can drum up business, i have a few contacts [through my dad] on the venue front.

HHmm costs:

1)Rental of Hall.
1a)Whe the owner knows what u plan they'll prob charge extra for elecy.
2)Weekends Insurance? for premisses? Players kit is own risk yes?.
3)A few bouncers.
4)Advertising/hype. Ok so once you've done one it gets cheaper for future events.
5)Desks/tables? not every hall out there has the kit.
6)Power distribution. You'd have to use the units they use on building sites for tapping the power off to each row of desks.
7)VAT.

What else peeps? were working here for a gross of 60 * 600 Â£36,000.

no way, u cant go straight in at a huge lan, u must build a client base and learn some lessons of smaller lans like the SL [stratlan] events that mpuk also run i think they r about 50-60 ppl, maybe 100 would even be a bit big for 1st events.

I am already involved in running a small lan club here in Leics for about 20 peeps so have an idea of what its about. The location is going to be important as it has to easily reachable for all clients and some serious work would need to be done locating a suitable venue that can easily handle the power requirements and deal with the requirements of a group of people (toilets and refreshments etc) Also some basic behaviour guidelines would have to be drawn up.
