Many of the reviews I have read show that people are succesfully overclocking the 7800 GS to 480/1350 on the standard HSF :D

Mine should arrive today (according to the Citylink website)

My SWMBO doesn't know yet. Hopefully I'll get it in the case without her noticing

I'm also interested in this card BB. I'd like to hear your comments on ease of use/installation as well as what you think of the overall quality of this card and it's manufacturer.

It is a good deal for what you get.

I guess install should be pretty easy. I am currently running my 6800GT using the 83.40 drivers from guru3d site ( http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1309 ). These are the first drivers to include the 7800GS in the inf file so it should be a case of plug in and restart PC :) NB these drivers ARE WHQL certified.

XFX are an excellent manufacturer. They warranty the cards for overclocking and supply software/instructions as to how to overclock. Additionally, XFX give a double lifetime warranty. this means you have lifetime warranty for the card and if you sell it the buyer is entitled to a lifetime warranty as well :)

The positives

With the 83.40 WHQL drivers I pulled old card out and inserted new card then rebooted. It just worked.

Half Life 2 Lost Coast Video Stress Test with HDR enabled. 2xAA and 4xAF

6800 GT overclocked to 6800 Ultra 75 fps
7800 GS 440/1300 (out of the box)  80 fps

I think I am CPU or Memory bandwidth limited at this point however it looked much nicer on the 7800GS

3D Mark 06
6800GT overclocked to 6800 Ultra  2661
7800 GS 440/1300 (out of the box) 3370

Doom3 Timedemo Demo1
6800 GT overclocked to 6800 Ultra 56.7 fps
7800 GS 440/1300 (out of the box)  76.4 fps

BF2
not tested yet

nVidia have generally been known for having poor performance with AA enabled. It looks like the 7800 fixes that.

Any negatives?

Yes, the HSF supplied with the card is bloody loud and screams annoyingly at you. I have contacted Zalman and Arctic Cooling to find out if they do a suitable cooling system for 7800 GS that is quiet as the 7800 GS has a different layout to the PCIe cards so the same coolers won't work :(

Overall pretty pleased apart from the noise but I have a zalman inline fan controller which I'm going to try and fit to the fan to turn the speed down a bit (even at 3D it never seems to go above 41C so plenty scope for turning the fan down a bit :))

Jamoe

nice :)

will seriously think about the same upgrade :)

I've tried OCing it and it takes 480/1400 nicely  :D   (still noisy though  <_< )

I wish I had a laptop with more oomph, and a decent internet connection. Damn those DC++ users...
