What's a 6800GT? Is that a Ford?

The reviews I've seen have measured the 7800GS against the X850XT/PE from ATi

The 7800 GS tended to outperform the X850XT PE most of the time. Additionally it can do HDR and SM3.

Don't know how your X800XT stacks up against the X850XT PE but hopefully this'll give you some idea

Would there be an overwhelming reason to ditch an X800XT for one of these?

Damn it - now I'm tempted.

I was going to hold off any further upgrades to my rig, in favour of a 64-bit and PCI-e rebuild later on in the year.

However, the infernal din currently eminating from my Gainward 6800 GT Golden Sample could be enough to sway me...

Personally, I would by an Arctic Cooler NV5 HSF/Fan for the 6800 GT which will cost you around £20 and kill the noise. I would then wait a year and save up some money before going PCIe/A64X2

Its a case of when you are going to take the plunge to PCIe? The cost to move all your hardware to PCIe system would be several hundreds of piunds. I am not ready for that so £230 on the 7800GS was a good buy for me. If you are thinking of going PCIe in the next year then I would hold off.

I'd looked at those, but had heard that they don't fit all that well on the Gainward cards.  They've got a non-standard layout for a 6800 GT.  The stock cooling solution is a dual-slot cage arrangement with two 60mm fans that tend to scream rather at full whack.  However, they come overclocked to Ultra speeds and fully warrantied straight from the factory. :)

I might just get an NV5 anyway, as they're not expensive.  What could go wrong eh?    ;)

I hear what your saying with the dual-core route.   Been speccing just such a system, and they're still just that little bit too pricey at the mo, considering the single-core performance that the majority of current games/apps would be using.
