I thought we were gonna get free ciggies but as from 6am today i live in a smoke free country which i suppose is a good thing, especially for non smokers who have to endure through passive smoking etc. Our local council in their great wisdom erected a bus stop style smoking enclosure for their smoking employees only to find under the new legislation it was illegal,as it had too many sides making it enclosed therefor a  no smoking area   I think the pubs n clubs will suffer greatly but it will be a much nicer cleaner enviroment. Some smokers say its infringing on their civil liberties not allowing them to smoke,,, but thats just hypocrisy as a non smoker could argue that the smoker was infringing his rite to a smoke free enviroment and possibly damaging his health with second hand smoke.
Any thoughts anyone?
 Good thing /bad thing.
Personally i think its a good thing, although I sometimes endulge in a little shmoke   its always out in the back garden as i cant stand the stink it leaves and as such can see both sides of the story.

Good thing. For me. Bad thing. For smokers. I don't like to stink of cigarettes. Smokers don't care about stinking. Love the 'smoking area' story. Bloody typical of common sense starvation.

Personally i hate smoking. I hate the smell of it and how it leaves that clingy smell to your clothes. I still hate the way i walk into buildings and breath in others smoke. Yes people should be allowed to smoke but if the majority only wants this to occur in a smoking area then thats how it should be. As with the Benthemite theory 'for the greater good' i would have to agree. Does this mean you can't smoke in Scotland or is this just a joke?

I think it's a brilliant idea.  At least it will highlight the fact that anti-smokers will happily climb into their cars and spend hours every week sitting in queues sucking in each others' exhaust fumes, but still get hysterical when somone lights a cig within their field of vision all the time babbling about "passive smoking".

I wonder how many of the anti-smokers will lobby their MPs to get cars banned from public use, hmm?

The whey-faced, anal retentive, killjoy cnuts have got a wake-up call coming.

I think it's great.  There's nothing worse than going out for a meal and coming back smelling of fags  ;)

DM that is a very good point. Since i am doing Environmental Law as part of my uni course it has made me be more aware of my surroundings. What i must say is that its really strange how buses are allowed to be on the roads when many say in Bournemouth for instance have long since past the stage of being environmental friendly. What does confuse me is why do the government want to enforce more park and ride schemes, when many bus services aren't up to the task? As a cyclist I breathe in much more unhealthy air than others say in cars as in many newer cars have air filters. This i hope will  change in the future but a good point to bring up none the less. Just as a reference check out the new tfl (transport for london) initiative for high emission cars to be charged for entering london here, which in my opinion is a joke as many buses give out more emissions than many lorries.

I think it's a great thing and I can't wait for the same to happen in england, but then I would think it's great as I'm a non-smoker! As said above - the stink on clothes (especially by the next day) and the general airlesness in some venues. Smokers keep free choice (though heavily taxed) but are now required by law not to impose that smokiness on staff, co-workers, and other clientelle who before could only excape it by quitting or actively not going out. To say venues have a choice whether or not to allow smoking is a bit pointless imo as most places just section off an area and call it non-smoking/smoking so as not to lose any clients (they know damn well the non-smokers still want to go out for a drink too and that a real boycott would never really have happened en-mass) bring on a bit of global warming (not too much) and it'll be warmer outside ;)

:lmfao: the real reason for local government revealed? As an extremely expensive and wasteful comedy act ;)

Scotland no longer part of the UK....way hey :)

I now personally can't wait for this to come in, in England ( I gave up smoking just over a month ago, and now really don't like smokey inviroments, I can see what all the non smokers have been going on about for years!)
Just with the Ban coming in next year has already changed the UK lots there are SO MANY people giving up at the moment.

Only when we win stuff we become British which is not very often  Recent part time British people included the likes of David Coulthard,Colin Mcrae but  both are Scottish again. DC was British while up @ the front with Mclaren, same with Mcrae when he won the wrc. Now ones in a Skoda and the other drives a rally car :pinch: they revert to being Scottish
