Gents,

I know this has been done to death, but I have an idea. We have a wide skill set here, which some more than others use...no names uni boy..

What I was thinking is, I'm not overly interested in your actual job, but what you can offer advice on.

Jas, Mad, Smite for example I'm guessing know about cars with Doggers et all, knowing about bikes, so if someone was looking for advice on buying or fixing they'd be your men.

I'm best part of useless, I can set up a network, but I'm crap at advanced desktop stuff.
There are a number of web monkey coders and php coders who could tout their skills.

So my starters would be;

Fat Bikes - Doggers
Sports Bikes - Smite, Stryker
Cars - Sorry Jas and Mad, it's you
Accountant - Ninj, Tealeaf

Even if it's stupid stuff, I need to take out a radiator the other day and wasn't entirely sure on the best process, but now I know, so do we have some DIY'rs?

I know we have the 'Help' bit, but a nice pinned list of skillsets would make me happy.

Oh and I wouldn't have thought of this if I wasn't off work DIY'ing, so it's not my fault.

I would qualify Benny's statement - I'm a Certified Financial Planner, not an accountant.  I work with people to develop, implement and review a Financial plan, not to flog them policies!  Being a CFP means that I know enough about accounting and tax to not want to be an accountant and sufficient to have a business/technical discussion with one.  Likewise for Lawyers, Investment Managers etc.

Financial Planners help people establish their life goals, the things stopping from achieving those goals and the action necessary to achieve those goals.  Many of the goals are not necessarily tangible, they often relate to quality of life.

A client's financial life is like a journey.  The client sets the final destination and the Financial Plan we develop for them gives them the specific directions they need to follow in order to get there safely.

you too eh? On the DIY front I'm certainly no expert but I have drilled a few holes and actually made a reasonable job of an engineered-board floor installation complete with edgings (not quite finished yet - could use some ideas with the steps...) and underfloor heating (laying of only, as electric connections made by a licenced chap per regulations :dummy: )

Other than that I guess you could say I should know a decent amount about electronics and electrical engineering given that I'm doing a PhD related to certain wireless data technologies...which also means I have to mess about with programming like matlab and C++ to some degree. Anything gadgety-ish I like to know about so I tend to keep vaguely up to date on electronics and technology :)

Although there's a huge difference between UK and the NL with buildings and so:
I work underneath a architect and draw buildings and so which he comes up with. Due to that I have to solve technical problems that he didn't see.
So: I draw buildings and buildingdetails and also know a little bit about constructions.
I know PEN is also doing something familiar.

Not sure if that's what you mean though Benny. Otherwise delete reply if offtopic.

I don't have a job title but I guess the closest would be Architectural PR Consultant. I'm emplyed by several companies on retainer to 1. promote their products and services in the architectural and associated press 2.Consult on other issues within the company sphere - depending on the client; ranging from anything such as designing literature, ad campaigns, promotions and below-the-line campaigns to media liaison and being the public face. The majority of my work is writing although I do photography where necessary.

I also publish export books for the DTI which go out via the diplomatic bag to embassies throughout the world. However I think that'll soon be stopping. I do dabble in other publishing bits and pieces now and then.

As a sideline I have, over the last several, years been buying selling and renting out properties. Although the portfolio has now been reduced somewhat as we capitalise every once in a while I still have a few properties left. I guess my knowledge of this would probably be most useful if anyone's thinking of BTL (buying-to-let). I've learnt a lot over the last 10 years - mainly that I'm not a Rackman-type businessman (just too nice for my own good!)

Finally I'm thinking about doing a Home Inspector's Course when the law changes in June. Something that's always interested me and with my links to the local estate agents I'm sure I can build up a portfolio of business there.

Finally, on a personal level, some you know that my wife and I had a long roller-coaster of a ride and had IVF treatment (hence the twins!). I can safely say that together we've very well-versed in such matters and had researched it to the nth degree. We've been asked questions by several people and are happy to oblige in whatever way. It's a major step - both financially and especially emotionally.

SO I guess:

Writing / PR / publicity / property / publishing / IVF are the things I can help with. - heh mostly P's then - perhaps I should get into p0rn ;)

I have worked as an independent doing import, export, b2b and retailing... mostly hauling goods from Asia to Europe and then distribution inside and outside the EU. Mono can help here also... I am not sure my experience with entrepreneurship is worth anything in the UK since company types and legislation is different I guess, but if you plan on going independent I might be able to give some thoughts. I also have some experience with accounting... it is what I currently do to make a living alongside the studies...

I am a bachelor in economics, with focus on macro ecnonomics, organisational culture and marketing. My current study deals with areas such as European integration, International management (internationalization, outsourcing, alliance strategies, culture across borders etc.), organizational design, strategy (how to evaluate and enter markets) and such.
Real life experience with this is limited, however. Been doing cases for companies to help them keep their culture as they grow. I have also helped people formulate mission statements, locating needs in markets, choosing distribution channels and making marketing plans.
So I guess I can offer advise on entrepreneurship, economics, marketing, management and organization.

I practically grew up in an architectural bureau and have helped out all my life so I might be able to supplement Duvel a bit.

Hobby wise I don't think I have much to aid with that really counts.

Well i suppose i can't fully vouch for my field as of yet but hopefully when i finish my degree i will be more experienced aswell as fully qualified. At the moment i am at University and am doing a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Coastal Management. This you may at first glance feel is to do solely with coasts but its actually extremely similar to alot of other courses such as Applied Geography. The course includes Environmental Law comprising of Nuisance, Tort aswell as many other subjects including freehold and leasehold. I can now give quite advanced advice on Law and its various concepts. My specialist subject is Coastal Management which so far has been an introduction to the effects of humans to the coast and how we can manage the coast to cope with rising tides and sea levels. Other subjects have also made me develop critical thinking and  to look at the environmental world in a different way. Other subjects include Geology, Chemistry, Biology, Surveying techniques and other useful activities to help my understanding of the environment.

In my spare time i learn more computing skills i.e. both hardware and software and am a golfer. I also know quite alot of useful tips for everyday living :P

I know a bit about storage disk arrays, mainly EMC SAN and NAS devices and NetApp appliances. I also support Brocade fabric switches, enterprise class. I dabble with SUN and HP UNIX boxes and the occasional Windows server. I do networking stuff and some Active Directory stuff for the NAS devices I support.

I've built my own car, run an old SIII diesel Landrover, built a few bikes, have a strange perversion for strokers, preferabley Suzuki GTs but also Kawasaki KHs, currently have most of a GSX1100 waiting for me in the garage.

I'm a qualified Snowboard instructor.

I also do quite a bit of horsey stuff and mountain biking. I have some experience with surgical procedures and human pain thresholds.

I can wipe my own bottom!  :dribble:
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

PC Specs:- Black box with some fans that go whirrr, a few lights, things inside that get warm, headphones, keyboard (a clicky one), mouse (with buttons and no squeak), disks (2-off SSD and HDD) and a monitor of sufficient proportions.

Garage doors etc. And him up there ^ is a smart harse!

Quite a narrow subset of that genre, I'm afraid - specifically shaft-drive, v-twin Yamaha XV1100s, acksherly.  And I'm now on a GSX600F, having left the lardy cruisers behind (literally), so I'm more at home in the sports bike clique now..

So out of interest, is this a good idea or not?

And Snooks, why is my back left wheel area making rhythmic knocking sounds when I go round roundabouts at speed?

I think it is a good idea as long as people are in the spirit to offer advice. I bet the combined resouces of the dMw community are vast.
