A quick look at the permissions and that forum is open to anyone. Want me to fix it or are you still in the process of doing so?

ok, fixed. I just denied all temporarily then added in the correct user groups.

Squonk just reported that he can see the whole forums - that right?

And when I was in there I only allowed viewing by Administrators & Old Boys Network memebrs - where did I miss temporary?

I've just fixed that. I had to go through and deny access to everything. It's all ok now. I'm guessing you turned the forums off?

Yeah I turned the forums off when I knew it had gone wrong - which was about 10 mins ago - then on again when I had spoken to you.

ok, a quick tutorial for adding usergroups and forums safely.

Firstly create a usergroup based off of the base level of access. Generally Registered Users (in our case it is Alpha Company). To do this you click;
Usergroups | Add New Usergroup.
On the page that loads up, at the top there is a nice little option called Create Usergroup Based off of Usergroup: in the list select the base level group. So in our case Alpha Company.

What this does is pre-select all of the options in the form ready for you to check and adjust. Normally you just change the name and fill in a description. Now, before you hit Save or press return, scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Here you will find the most useful tool of all; Default Forum Permissions:
Create Permissions Based off of Usergroup:
Here you will generally select the group that you've used above, so again in this example Alpha Company.
What this does is create that usergroup with basic permissions so that anyone you add can't see things they are not meant too!

To check this, go into Forums & Moderators and click Forum Permissions. You will see that the usergroup that you have just created will only show up the permissions from the usergroup it is based on.

Now, creating a new forum, go into Forums & Moderators and click Add New Forum. Then you will see that you have the same option at the top, Create Forum Based off of Forum: This is a good idea as it saves you having to check the options and will pre-fill the fields for you.

Now you enter a Title and Description. The Display Order is where you want it to appear in the forum heirachy(sp) and Parent Forum is the category it should appear under. Parent Forum is a really cool thing as permissions for this forum will be inherited from the parent by default. So if the usergroup above cannot see the Parent Forum then they will not be able to see this new Child Forum that you are creating. (You can manually override this if you want to in the Forum Permissions page)

Click Save and your new forum is created. Again, it is always a good idea to check the Forum Permissions to make sure it is how you want it to be. The key for the colors on the page are as follows;

    * Color Key
    * Standard: Using default usergroup permissions
    * Customised: Using custom permissions for this usergroup
    * Inherited: Using custom permissions inherited from a parent forum

There we go, safe usergroup and forum creation. Bear in mind though, that the more usergroups there are then the more admin arse it is to keep the permissions in check!

Now you know why I was worried about doing it.:tongue:

I didn't include them initially because of lack (absense) of activity.
