I've had a couple of PMs lately from dMw oldtimers bemoaning the lack of dMw kinship as in the good old days. After some thought I think they have a point. I can also see where the feeling eminates from ...

When we restructured to Head/Section Admins we asked our newly appointed section leaders to appoint their game admins from the active members within their section. This they did and the new forum permissions were applied. What I failed to appreciate at the time was that by dropping our longtime members (though less active) from the 'inner circle' we lost their input and they lost a sense of belonging.

What I'd like to propose is a separate forum area where just the selected few can talk privately about life, the universe and dMw.

My initial thoughts are that we should include these people ...

OldBloke, TeaLeaf, Blueball, Gandalf, Doorman, Sadako, Smite, Fatbob, JAS, Squ0nk, Sheepy, Sn00ks, Frenzy, Stryker, Doggers, Benny and Albert.

Thoughts?

A good idea but how do we decide who is "in"?

Is it by invitation only or people who joined before a certain date or just the guys we enjoy playing CS with <- this is the bit that gets my vote BTW.

An interesting URL:

If we go back 1 more month I disappear :(

I'd like to suggest that we do not mention this outside in the main forum. I have had a few comments over the last year around "is this just the old boys network then" so this may just reinforce a false impression.

Indeed. It will be made clear to the eventual participants what the rules are.

Excellent. Do we all get to wear our smoking jackets and get the key to the cognac cupboard?

Seriously though, it's a cool idea. A place where we can all hang out and spin yarns about the good old days. I'm all for it. After all, it's just another forum area.

Damn it, where's my 'wot he said' and 'I'm with stupid' smilies when you need them!

I got not probs with a section like this, time will tell if it gets used, but as G said it's just another forum, so we could build this into the forum no problem whatsoever.

On the mean time I've been playing with the old forum content and messing with words and pictures to see if I understand how everything slots together.  I'm going to tryt o start working my way throug the website this weekend to change what I can in preparation for whatever we come up with as the panacea

I should have a couple of hours free this weekend - anything you want me to look at?

TeaLeaf

Pick a page, any page, send me the updated text and I'll add it.  Also if you come across any new pictures you want included then send them to me too please - tealeaf@ our domain will get them there.  I have basically just been playing with the main cmps index page so far to check my understanding of it, but I'll be trying to branch out this weekend.

One other thing we need to do is add the WoW announcement to the forums soon.  I'll tryt o draft somethign for that too.

Can you create a new forum area called "Old Boys Network"

This should only be visible and accessible to the names in the post above.

I'd have a go myself but I do not want to screw this up as it could have some people asking awkward questions.

No probs, I'll look at this later today. Remind me if I forget.

The easiest way to do this is to create a new usergroup, add the members above as secondary members then create the new forum and only allow that usergroup to access that forum.

There is a nice new feature now that you can use to create a forum based on another forum, so if you use one of the admin forums as a template then it shouldn't become visible to the end users as you create it. (new forums are generally created with base level permissions)

If it's not done by the time I get back home (lunchtime expected) I'll add it myself, I'm pretty happy that I won't screw it up.......

Cool, I'll let you do it then as it's good practice

As said create a new usergroup with all the names above attached as secondary members. Then create the new forum and only allow that usergroup access.

All done.

SecretSquirrel?
FBG?
Radman?

Just some names from the LAN I section, so are of the right era....

cool, but you can still see it if you're not a member of that group. ie, logged out. Is this intentional?
