My PC has been crashing at random for a while.....so was planning an upgrade, but wait, why don't I defrag and Norton and all the rest of it to get it at least to limp along....

Oh no, my TANGO. it's screwed. won't boot..

So I have no PC. No nothing dammit. so I may not be on for a week or so....fck knows where my hl disk is....I saved my key though. On the drive that is knacked.

Sadly I too have had my PC take a nose dive last night. XP absolutely refuses to boot in and hangs at the XP boot screen while it rumbles through my hard drive before rebooting again. This cycle repeats for ever.

I assume it's looking for a system file that's not where it is supposed to be. Safe Mode and repairing from the XP CD do nothing. So it looks like a complete re-install for me. I suspect Spy-bot SD may be to blame as the last thing I did was a spy-ware clean-up.

Hope you get your PC back on the road soon to Benny.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Benny

Interesting. Mine is XP.

Complains about a missing system file. Tried recovery to no avail..
I'm sure somewhere along the line it is Sheepy's fault.

goddam piece 'o' crap.

ah well, prolly needed rebuilding. I am building over the old filesystem though. I refuse to lose 5 gig of movies for the tempermental piece of shite.

I'm assuming Diskeeper is the best thing to tidy up afterwards?

I also kept my CS directory......just need to salvage my key.

The reason I asked is that two people in the office here did a Norton update last night and they both lost their IP Stack afterwards.

There's some info on the net.

Nope I don't use Norton anything so that's not it. I'm not getting any messages at all just a blank screen after the XP boot screen, a three or four minute wait while the HD rumbles away and the HD light flickers all over the place, and then an automatic reboot back to bios and so the cycle repeats.

The HD is fairly new and a recent scan suggested no sectors were FUBAR.

I'm fairly well backed up so apart from loosing a few game saves and a lot of well watched TV shows I should be OK for a re-install.
