Just make sure that you scan the file w/ a virus scanner before using it. An, normaly wow addons dont have a .exe or other executacles in there.

Yep correct, but that's not the only problem. Some websites exploit security holes in your browser, so they can execute code on your machine. Sometimes stuff like this gets embedded in banners they show on WoW related sites; they can't really prevent this, since these banners are being provided by a third party and thus the websites that host them have no direct control over this.

What will help is getting a firewall that blocks all unauthorized outgoing network traffic, so keyloggers can't 'call home' to send the account information they gathered.

And also using a real web browser (read: not IE) would be to prefer as well! Both Opera and Firefox are much better alternatives :D

Did you know that Firefox has more known bugs then IE (since it's open source)? They're mainly targetting IE, because most people use that and they're to lazy to write an exploit that works for all browsers :narnar: .

Firstly, the numbers of bugs isn't necessarily directly related to vulnerability, type of bug is also of importance: if Firefox for instance has 1000 bugs, that all relate in different ways to look and feel, html formatting etc, and IE has one bug that opens up for an attacker to take full control over your computer, Firefox is still safer than IE.

And secondly, just look what you wrote yourself: Firefox has more known bugs that IE... It's not the known bugs that will kill your system, it's those bugs that are only known to a small group of malicious hackers and not yet to the wide public.
And also, an open source system will have a far better chance to detect and fix critical bugs faster than what you can expect from IE :learn:

True, but I you want to find a nice way to exploit something in Firefox you don't have to look further then their own bug tracker.

When I said that Firefox has more known bugs then IE, I was refering to serious errors that can be exploited, not bugs in general.

Like you stated bugs are found sooner due to the open source nature of those programs, but fixing speed is an entirely different matter. Most of the people that contribute to writing these programs don't have any obligations to anyone, so they won't get their ass whooped if a serious bug isn't fixed immidiately or someone gets 'harmed' by using their software. A commercial company is guaranteed to do something about it directly, unless they want to get sued for damages :narnar: .

Just on a sidenote, open source sound nice, but it just doesn't work imo. Too much amatures that write crap. It only works when the quality standards of the stuff that's released to the public are stricly enforced (like they do at Apache).

Bob

:withstupid:
I'll agree with you on some of that, at least a bit :flirty:

However, my point wasn't necessarily that Firefox is the only way to go, just that there is other and far better alternatives than IE. Take Opera for instance - that's even a Norwegian product :D

And also, just another thing:
Quote from: Sandrion;178384They're mainly targetting IE, because most people use that and they're to lazy to write an exploit that works for all browsers :narnar: .
Which browser that in theory are the easier one to exploit due to number of (serious) bugs isn't really that interesting. When almost all the bad guys are targeting IE, all the other browsers should be safer to use anyhow - at least for the time being :narnar:

Seriously Andin, as long as you use a real web browser and a firewall, you're safe. I've been using Curse for two years, and I've never had a problem at all.  It's all about just taking the necessary precautions :)

This is a direct link to SW Stats (still on Curse, but you won't have to browse the site, if that feels any better for you).
