I've just found out that Valve didn't update the voice codec. What they have actually done is to release a new one with a different name so I have now updated the server configs to use the new codec. Hopefully, this means that comms will be decent on CS Source now.

For those of you that run servers the new codec line is:

sv_voicecodec vaudio_speex

All 3 servers now updated and restarted to run new codec. Welcome to voice comms heaven people :)

Norm

Good job BB, vast improvement.  :D

So basically, all they've done is allow us to use the same 'speex' codec that we've been trying to get working since we moved on from CS:1.6 and CS:CZ.

Which we have had working, but only for one round because their crap codec was embedded in the engine so it reset every time and went back to the crap one.

And its taken them how long??

Coming next week "Valve discover fire"!

One of the things that became obvious last night is that we probably ALL need to revisit our voice setups in CS Source Options. You can adjust both the receive and transmit volumes from there. Use "voice_loopback 1" in console to hear your own voice as an "echo" and you will get a rough idea of what others are hearing. Use "voice_loopback 0" to turn it off again or it will annoy you big time :)

Additionally, in an effort to communicate using the old codec I think that many of us ended up with our microphones quite close to our mouths. Your mic should be 2 to 5 centimetres away from your mouth - any closer and the received sounds can be terribly distorted and impossible to understand.

In short, can we all make sure our comms are top notch so we can get the absolute best out of this update :)

Cheers peeps :)

What he said, last nite there where several ppl (dan and harry beaver mostly) that had enormous ammount of static and cracking on thier comms line, to a point where it just hurts when they talk. Also, dont use the comms to much if you got nothing sensible to say, it suppresses CSS sound, making footsteps and such very much harder to hear.

That wouldn't have helped your score Bastet :flirty:

BTW, there's also a Program called Voice_tweak which should help if you have problems with your ingame voice.
