An unrefundable deposit should be considered. Ninja and i have discussed this and its a shame that people seem to book and then cancel at the last minute. I also wouldn't mind a few more games. Sponsership was considered a few lans ago by myself but it never really went anywhere. I would prefer someone of admin status to take this role up as i don't really have any say in advertising or what we can offer them. A fun map server with maps and rotation. I tried my best but i wouldn't mind some help testing some maps. Maybe i could skype with someone and test some maps. I have a large collection i just need someones time to test them out and tell me their thoughts. ANyone willing to volunteer?

If i can actively take part in those forum discussions about maps I would love to. The reason behind wanting a fun server at the lan is that I get moaned at for not setting one up by a few people every six months. I tried really hard to get some maps together but they weren't to mr white's liking . What i really want to get is a fun pack that has a few fun maps that are plain and simply fun. Such as a few which would make people laugh i.e. remember that one when you slide down a huge ramp down to a pit full of terrorists? Also a few deathmatch ones. I suppose gamegame is a little like this but sometihing like stoneworld, poolday and iceworld would be fantastic. I really want to get an agenda setup for the lans though such as a regular photoshoot so we can take photos of attendees and  a lunch to end the lan would be a very good idea. It can't be too expensive maybe a ploughman's or something similar to tempt people in.

It wasn't just me!  The first 2 or 3 maps we tried from your rotation had serious map flaws or were crap.  Not just my opinion but also the other people on the server.  It was obvious that the maps had not been tested or you would have seen that yourself.  :sideways:  I spent a lot of time before the LAN getting the servers ready and the maps working for GunGame and CS, I only loaded maps on the Gungame server that I had tested and I went through dozens before deciding on the ones we had running.  I assumed when you had the list of fun maps together that you had done the same.

Quote from: Dr Sadako;213392I made a number of suggestions on maps before the LAN. What happened to those? As far as I have heard they weren't played.
Regarding a "fun map server" I think you need to be more specific. What is the pupose of the server? Deathmatch or TCS? Decide that first then the map selection becomes easier.

I think we did mess up on the map choices last LAN. It was unforeeseable at the time and the maps were agreed by several people present (myself included).

I'm not sure what happened to the map discussions and your suggestions, but with your unfortunate absence they didn't come off.

I think it would make sense if you co-ordinated it Mats as you and Whitey are forever discussing new maps in the CS Admin section. If Ghosty also chips in his ideas and then we can get them sorted well in advance... then perhaps we could invite people to play test them on Baldric or something.

I don't think we really need a dedicated fun map server... it just makes more work on the people running them. Having two game servers worked well and apart from when the comps is running - one could easily just have fun maps loaded on to them on an ad hoc basis.

Does that make sense to all?

Who moans at you? Point them in my direction :boxing:

There is an issue here of left hand, right hand here. Ghosty, you're probably not aware of the amount of time that Sadako and Whitey spend playtesting, reviewing and discounting maps as part of their normal activities. I don't see much point in you replicating that.

At the end of the day it has to be Whitey's call as he is the section admin for all things CS (And he's the poor sod that has to set up the servers :)).

I'm sure they'd like like input, suggestions and ideas and help playtesting (done on Balders normally I think).

I'm not stamping on your enthusiasm mate and it's certainly appreciated but it just makes more sense for it to be co-ordinated rather than done individually. I'm also happy to help playtest maps but my online time is somewhat limited.

If we can generate a list of games and work our way through them then I'm sure we'll end up with a nice little fun list.

That sounds like a good compromise Pen. Personally i didn't realise the time and effort Whitey and Sadako have given up to playtesting as i cannot see that part of the forum. I put time into choosing the maps for the fun server and thought they were appropriate. We all make mistakes but i chose the ones that i had playtested and worked fine on my machine and thought were fun and so put them forward. For the future we can as pen has outlined above choose a series of maps and put them into a cycle. The reason for a fun server is ultimately that many people in our clan have played cs for a long time. The same maps can get boring and i remember at Tl's recent bbq a small converstaion that i had with Doorman, OB and TL where we discussed how we wanted a fresh look at cs. As very few people ever volunteer for positions within the weekend this makes it hard to organise both the event and the servers and a big thankyou was given to those who had taken time to sort out the event. Another matter to bring to the table is that the next lan will be quite tricky as Pen willl not be there so we need to organise a new structure and assign tasks to sheepy or myself so that we can get things done in time. I think an announcement on this subject should be put up in the lan section to help with the direction of matters as Pen does do quite alot of the usual setup matters and coordination.

I look forward to seeing the outcome....

To give you an idea of the amount of work put in: There are 21 maps in_the_mappacks and I have gone through 110 maps myself (I have them in a separate folder). Some have been discarded at an early stage and hasn't even been put forward for testing to Whitey. I know Whitey have worked in a similar way and tested maps that he discarded, which I haven't looked at. So between us I wouldn't be surprised if we have gone over 150+ maps to reach those 21. That is only for TCS and MH in mind.

There are about 25 maps that I went through prior to the LAN and I posted my suggestions in the discussion section for LANXII: AWP_map and
5_other_maps. I still think they could work for the next LAN as well.

Could you describe more about the thoughts discussed?

Yeah it would be good to know what was discussed - otherwise we could all just be wasting our time.

That's not really a problem (and should be discussed in t'other thread anyway). I'm not even sure my trip to the States will clash as yet. Besides, 90% of the work is done pre-Lan...... Also I'd be surprised if Sheepy doesn't go and as he's the LAN manager I'm sure he'll take up the mantle. (Hmm that reminds me, I should post up that announcement).

Basically a few members of the clan have played this game since beta or even from its early stages. OB, Doorman and Tl felt that they had played enough and moved onto live for speed and wow respectively. The fact that a few members didn't even load up cs this time was a bit of a blow and i think a fun server could rekindle a few of those players who want a fresh run around with their clanmembers. I mean they wouldn't be in the clan if they didn't want to still be a part of it would they? Basically i know meathook and boomer maps are fun but wouldn't it be nice to load up scout knives and shout around the room and have quake noises going monster kill etc. It could bring a new relaxing and different atmosphere and gameplay to our lan's. I love the present structure but a little twist on friday night with a tournie over a 5 map fun map server could be awesome. I would love to work on a mapcycle and poolday as suggested by sadako would be an awesome starting point.

My 2p.

Whitey

So what your saying is that TCS is past it and it's time for something new? :sideways:

I was actually thinking more the other way... We should be encouraging more TCS style play at the LAN to get some of the people who normally play other games interested and forget about having frag servers all together!

GhostMjr

I see where your coming from Whitey. I am not suggesting the end of TCS but more a choice of different gameplays or style of tournaments. A few rounds on poolday after a few beers is far easier than tcs as we all saw with Alffubar :).

Whitey

A lot of us have a few beers on a Friday night and it doesn't cause any issues playing TCS, why should it be different at the LAN?

Well, it is our LAN and I think he should adapt to us and not vice versa. Sure we could have DM or fun type tournaments and we have had that in the past. Having that type of tournaments requires maps that are suitable for it though. It is not a question of just throwing anything on the server and playing it, irrespectively if it is TCS or DM. I hope you learned that from the last LAN.

Right Chaps. Three months to go so we could look into a few maps that could be possibilities.

fy_stoneworld and fy_iceworld could be possibles for a quick intense game.

Thoughts?
