I'm mid re-installing XP and have got to the point of bunging HL2 for playing (lol) CSS. The last time I did a fresh install from the disk and let steam do the rest, but as I'm on a 1Mb connection it took a good portion of a day to get up and running.

I recently saw a post somewhere on the forum that said you can copy the Valve folder from an existing install, delete a file then run steam and it will update and work.

So what am I to do?

Oh, and can I install steam on another comp on the same account but just for HL1 and cs?

install new version of steam, then go into where it was installed and you will see steamapps folder. Go to your old install and copy the steamapp folder and place it where the new one is and viola your up ad running

it will copy your games and mods

also i have steam with the same account on my lappy, main  and backup, although i dont play them at the same time so no haslle

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

Thanks for the info :D

Still spent ages trying to get CS1.6 working in widescreen on my subnotebook but it looks like I'll have to wait for some alternate or hacked drivers to show up :(

Don't suppose anyone knows how to force a res of 1024x600 @ 60hz? Google says loads but none work

sulky_uk

try
Open Steam -> Go to My Games -> Right Click Counter Strike -> Click Properties -> Click Set Launch Options -> Add "-w 1024 -h 600"

or whatever the resolution you need

Cheers Sulky, That's the first thing I tried, when cs starts it does force a res change but eventually goes to 1024x768. The searching I've done tells me I can't have widescreen in cs due to the onboard video being fairly basic. I did read something about editing a file called user_config.cfg but I don't have that file in my install.

Everything else I've installed works so it's a cs problem, I'll wait and see what others do to get around it as the comp is new to the market and has a growing community surrounding it.

Thanks again for helping :D

I'm not sure, but aren't you able to run the game in a window?

Yeah in a window and fullscreen with black bars each side. The game runs fine, infact better than expected, but on a 8.9" widescreen I could do with as much as I can get.

I'm going for CSS now to see how well that runs on a 900mhz celeronM.

Well well well I I I locked locked locked and and and load load load ed ed ed on boomer with the bots at about 2fps, the vid stress test returned 12.71 fps. HL2 is playable but fps drops badly during action scenes.

Un-editable dynamic shared video memory allocation :ranting2: so I won't be fragging CTs whilst having a poo. At least it ran in widescreen this time.

Might this help in the future?

That's the way forward for sure.

They must be doing some of that already as when I installed HL2/CSS and went to the options, some of my details and settings were already there including the last player name I'd used, which took me by surprise.
