I have a couple of longish trips coming up with my two kids and I am looking into either a portable DVD player or a handheld gaming device for them to use during the trip to help keep themselves entertained.

On the DVD player I have no idea where to start, so any suggestions are appreciated.

As for the gaming device I have figured out Nintendo DS Lite and the PSP but have no idea of the difference or quality, so comments from existing users would be welcomed please.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I have a Nintendo DS Lite, and i've very happy with it. There are alot of nice games on it, and with some expensions packs you can even watch movies on it (even dvd quality, from movies you converted with the provided program).

The graphics are pretty good imo (prolly not as good as with the PSP) but i just play them because of the games itself anyways (else i would play the versions on the PC), but i don't know if your kids demand the best grafics so can't help you there.

As far as the games go, I would recommend NFS carbon, any Marios (especially Mario cart), Pokemon and diffirent game packs, if you go for the NDS-L that is.

How old are they? I'd say that younger kids 12 and under or so would probably enjoy a DS as it's more kid friendly, slightly more basic graphics, but really fun games and easier to get into. PSPs are probably better for older kids as they have movie capabilities as standard. However saying this, I have a DS (don't play it now though, I prefer PC gaming) and haven't any hands-on experience with a PSP.

Kids are 12 and 8, so I am guessing that's 2 x DS Lites I'll be going for then.  Thanks all, now to peruse the games themselves.  Got a link for those cards KKND or any one?

buy 2 psp's and some 4 gig sd cards and you can get it (psp)cracked and put "cough" games and movies on it. for £10 you can get 2 long life batteries as well. i played my psp  with film and games all the way to tucson that was 11 hours, and all it used was the extended battery and 80% of the normal one

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

What's wrong with "I spy with my little eye" or doing the Alphabet game with number plates?

Tried that last year, but at 39,000 feet they failed miserably to spot any number plates.

Thats what I grew up with and I turned out fine-ish. I'd go for the PSP if you're going to do this because then you can refuse to buy them birthday and christmas presents because it cost so much.
