The voice comms transmission volume in CoD4 can tend to be very quiet unless you setup your comms properly.

    Start CoD4
SelectOptions
Select Voice chat
Ensure voice is ON
Set the small volume slider to max
Speak normally (you dont have to press the voice transmit key you have assigned)
A white bar should appear in the level Indicator and you should get AT LEAST this much white showing (this is my settings and Armitage says i come through loud and clear):

If you don't, then try putting your mic closer to your mouth. If that doesn't help then you need to check that the "Microphone +20dB Boost" for your microphone is enabled. You will find this setting in Control Panel under Sound or possibly on the volume control in your system tray. Some programs (Skype & Dragon Dictate in particular) are notorious for disabling this setting when you use them so you might have to reset it frequently; I do and I just got used to having to do it. NB that the boost setting is usually found under the "record" part of the sound control dialogue box and not the playback section - you are after all "recording" your voice.

If you find that you are getting way too much white showing you can reduce the record level (see above image) until it is reasonable - people will soon tell you if you are too quiet or too load

Hope this helps us have happy gaming? (<- ? is optional for TL) :)

*** BUMP ***

There are still too many members whose comms are not up to scratch. With the restrictions of hardcore mode, voice comms are essential for good teamwork.

So when you join the server ask the question - 'Are my comms OK?'. If you get no response then they're probably not. So use the info posted above to get them setup correctly.

If you are having problems hearing someone - say so. If others agree then again time to point them to this thread.

Now that your comms are setup and your team are hearing you properly - make sure that you use them wisely.

I had this problem at first but just raising the record level in game didn't seem to help. When I clicked the +20dB boost out in Windows on the microphone sound became much better. However, this setting didn't work well with CS so I only switch it on for CoD4.

Good point. I have an easy time of it because, with my early Audigy, I have the boost on for all games. If I'm too loud - let me know.

If you go to the voice tab in CS options there is an option (tick box) to allow you to enable/disable +20db boost for CS only :)

If you use a plug-and-play USB headset and you are being told that your comms are too quiet then, AFAIA, you will need to use a non-USB headset to enable 'mic boost' to work (USB headsets with a good driver set may or may not allow this).

There's no way around this that I'm aware of so (if you can't beg, steal or borrow another headset) please consider purchasing an appropriate headset. Teamwork isn't the same (or even possible) if you can't be heard.

Is the enable/disable +20db boost,  because of The USB Headset or Vista

Some USB headsets are plug-and-play and, as such, tend not to have any drivers. Some, however, do come with a driver set that might allow the mic boost to be implemented. This should be OS independent but Vista is always the exception that proves the rule.

BlueBall will be along shortly with definitive answer :D

My voide comms work fine in CSS, they work in windows, i can hear myself. Eveything works ok except COD4.

In the menu options, voice comms is on, i get absolutely no option to change the mic level, i get absolutely no feed back what so ever that anything is happening whan i talk in to the mic.

It's plugged in,
it works in everything apart from COD4

i'm totally......off
