Leech

Any ideas how we should handle this this LAN? Last LAN I was cut out of play a lot due to leeching. This time I would like to play a bit more.

Should we have 2 separate networks?

2 network cards per computer?

Network wizards guide us!

What cut you out? I guess it depends on whether simultaneous gaming/leeching was maxing out your CPU, your drive throughput, or your network card.

If it was just the NIC, then the only real way round will be a second NIC - which leads to where I suspect you were going which is whether to have a second VLAN dedicated to leeching. I'd say yes if traffic is high - but that will depend on whether everybody has, or is willing to install, a second NIC.

All five "slots" filled with ppl all downloading continuously for 2 days. Maybe I should have a less interesting share ...

bring all your "holiday photos" on a separate hard disk and sling that into a spare PC that maybe someone could supply? It doesn't have to be a great PC, just enough to allow people to pull the files from it. That way you are "untouched"?

My bijou server will be making an appearance anyway, (as I owe people some files (sheepy gfk) and its a pain rooting through packed boxes to find disks - they get first dibs)

I'd suggest that if you want to leech and you are doing so onto your CS computer, then you're gonna struggle unless you get another nic. I'm sure the god of all things network will have a say, but at the moment I can provide 48 switched ports, 2 for me, the rest can fight amongst yourselves.

I think I have a spare IDE Mats, you can plug your drive in the server if that's easier for you.

Is it practicle/possible to have 2 nic's, have 1 across the LAN and have the other connected directly (via x-over) to another PC, then if a large amount of data needed to be transfered(i.e benny's porn stash) it wouldn't affect him/us too much? :morning:

As mentioned in the original announcement post one of the plans is to have some leech time scheduled into the weekend amd also to have fully explored the 2 x NIC card software that Stryker successfully used at the last LAN giving him 200Mbps bandwidth. We will also look at having a separate LAN for leeching.

Aye bring 'em along Mats.
What I was suggesting was if you bring your leech drive, I'll put it in my server, double up the nics if neccessary and let people leech without affecting either of our games machines.

Hey guys.. I will also be bringing a leech PC. It'll have 2 nics (hopefully utilizing the Stryker setup - TL can you assist me on that?) and only one HDD in it. I'll have room for 2 more if necessary.

This will not be attached to my gaming PC at all ('cept through the network).

Let me know if that works for you guys.

I am sure that thsi thread will develop as we get nearer the LAN and help will be available once we know what our firm plans are! For the moment they are still in planning and development stages :wink:

in all fairness there was an "unknown" issue with the network at the last lan.... it was performing pants.

I'd say if anyone wants unhindered leeching then they should come with TWO NICS!!

If said persons dont want two nics or are unable to fit two nics then leeching for them at least should be restricted to set times, say for a couple of hours of a lunch time, and over night.

weather we use a central server, black magic whatever dosnt matter so long as ALL leeching is done on a seperate network. In fact anyone wanting to leech with only one nic can simply be plugged into the other lan as and when they want to.
