BlackAdder4 purchased

The replacement for the ageing and failing BlackAdder2 has been purchased and should arrive with us tomorrow for software install and configuring. The new server, BlackAdder4 (BA4) will provide us with some resilience should we suffer any problems whatsoever with BA3.

BA3 is a 2U server currently specc'd with:

2U Case
2 x Opteron 265 (Dual Core Opteron)
4GB DDR ECC Reg3200 (4 x 1GB sticks to allow further RAM if needed)
2 x 74GB Western Digital 10K Raptor HDD

BA4 has been specc'd a little higher for some future proofing and to allow us to run all the dMw services from BA4 in the event of a BA3 hardware failure. BA4 is a 1U server specc'd as follows:

IBM System x3550 7978 - Dual Quad-Core Xeon E5430 2.66 GHz
1U Case
2 x Intel Quad-Core Xeon E5430 / 2.66 GHz ( Quad-Core )
4GB DDR2 ECC PC2-5300 CL5 Buffered DIMM
2 x 250 GB HD running Raid 0

We will configure and test the server upon receipt and in due course post a maintenance notice to confirm the date when it will be installed into the rack.

We already know that the latest problems were caused by a DOS attack in the upsteam. If there are issues still remaining then please let us know.

Sorry people. New server doesn't mean new games.

However, it does mean we now have the horsepower to, for example, add a second CoD4 server and make it public or a demo server for LFS.

BA4 update ...

Extra CPU - fitted. Running two Xeon quad cores at 2.66GHz
Extra RAM - fitted. Now running 4GB.
Extra cooling fan fitted. All 7 (yes, 7) screaming away happily.
2 x 250GB SATA 3GB/s drives installed in Raid 1 (mirrored) configuration.
Windows Server 2003 SP2 64bit installed (down, Doggers)

So far, so good
