Ok there seems to be a little confusion re the forum badges. Err Ok I seem to be a little confused about the forum badges then :)

We have gold which is Section Head, no problem.

We have red which I 'thought' was for members who had forum admin status i.e. can add and remove threads, grant permissions and generally do the nut's and bolts stuff in my absence. They would be TL, OB, Pen, Gandy and BB

We have green which is for forum specific and global moderators. This would be for people who just moderate i.e deal with dodgy posts, sticky, lock etc.. I think there needs to be a distinction between forum admins and moderators as they have very different permissions and abilities.

We have a special forum contributor badge for quality posters etc. or rather we don't as this seems to be the green forum badge. If we keep this as the green badge then I will have to lump all the forum admins and the moderators into a single group and give them all a red badge. A red bade seems a bit much for someone who moderates say the World of Warcraft forum compared to what is required for the red badges in other areas.

I seek enlightenment........

The way I see it ...

Comparing CounterStrike to Forum badges

Green

CS - player meets criteria to wear tag in-game.
Forum - member is a 'quality' poster.

Red

CS - in-game admin
Forum - Moderator of at least one forum section

Gold

CS/Forum - Section Head

I agree with Smilo and thought we had agreed discussed it thus:

Gold: Section Head

Red {game} - Senior game admin
Red {forum} - Forum administrator (BB, Pen, OB, TL, Gandy)

Green {game} - active player meeting standards
Green {Forums} - Someone who makes a positive contribution to the forum be that a moderator of a thread or in terms of posting etc (i.e. helping a lot in the help section for instance). Active (involved!) moderators of individual threads would get this badge, as would people who make positive contributions in posting.

Greg and I worked on the premise that the Red forum badge was more for the administrators - or those people who had more complete forum-based permissions rather than specific thread permissions.... in the same way that the Red CS badge is for senior CS admins rather than the public admins.

The idea is to make it simple for people to find someone for any specific event. If they have a CS problem they look for the Red badged CS - those people with more powers than the public admin (theoretically). It should be the same for the forum imo.... there's no point in someone approaching a red-badged forum person if they haven't got  the powers to remove / edit posts etc outside of their own section.

?

Depending on the correct answer I'll amend the red badge's name to make it clearer.

My understanding ties in with Pen's post.

Great. I  know we had discussed several options for the red and green forum tags. This solves my second concern which was working out which moderators actually do any moderating i.e. two moderators haven't accessed the forum since the spring. With this plan it doesn't matter, mods don't get the badge by default they have to earn it for good moderation. It's still going to a be a 'challenge' working out who to give the green badge too. Still with great power comes great responsibility :D

Hope this works for everyone else.

It's going to be tough but we do need a framework for it Greg. It's a lot easier for the games deciding who qualifies, for the forum it's going to be a completely new set of standards.

As a forum badge is a requisite for the Golden Badge, I think we'll need to publish guidelines on how people can achieve getting a green badge. I know a lot of it is going to be common sense and to a degree your call as is it with the gaming badges but it would make it easier in the long run if we can come up with a formula - something which I know isn't going to be easy.

The only thing I can think of just now would be to award the badge to someone that the admins as a group agree on with Smilo having final say - not an ideal solution but I feel sleepy :)

Paying me £50 a go might work?

What I'd like to achieve is the promotion of the idea that everyone can do their bit for the community and be seen to be awarded for it. I don't necessarily think I or the other Seniors need a Forum badge - our Seniornousness says that :)

I'm happy to go with whatever you guys decide but, just as an idea, we could very easily adopt levels at red badge i.e the red badge with a superimposed number.

I'm happy to go with

red = this person can sort out stuff on the forums, lock posts, ban users, create new forums etc etc. They have a functional role.

green = this person posts good stuff, informative stuff, is very helpful with answers, moderates AND promotes the forum they moderate and generally makes the forums a better place to be. They have a quality role.

And as to who exactly gets a green badge, thanks for the input. I'm happy to go with a collective approach. If we can get some guide lines to make sure we're vent handed then that would be great.
