I just got my 4 cores running on my server:), but it now sounds a bit like a airboat :crying:

Which started me thinking about the eco friendless of folding. I can see if you have it on your computer, that you are sitting in front of and it takes the odd cycle all well and fine. But if like the box next to me at the moment which must be taking loads more power to stop my 4 cores from cooking. seems a bit immoral if what they say about global warming is true. Then we may find a we help a few people with some terrible disease but add to CO2 emissions. :g:

Just wondered how many people run PC's 24/7 just to fold?

Discuses.....

Gandalf

It will increase your power consumption, so in effect will raise your CO2 footprint.

As a result, no it is not eco friendly at all.

Also it is not eco friendly to use car, microwave oven or watch tv, BUT folding does something good atleast. In my opinion thats better than like watching tv as it does only harm.

If you think about it, most of the stuff we do is not eco friendly.  I atleast hope folding will cause more good than bad. :)

Global warming is a load of rollocks. Just a great way of raising taxes. If politicians were that worried about carbon footprints they'd start be cutting out some of the horrendous waste that they themselves propagate.

How the hell this planet existed for so long I don't know.

Fold away if that's your thing, you pay the lecky bill!

It might if as many resources were thrown at it as there are at GW :eyebrow:

Lets all use Google then!!! 5 bilion hits a day extra might make Holland a lot warmer in the winter!! :P

Anyways I think this "global warming" is total BS, invented my politics to keep us under control and give them an excuse to waste some extra goverment money.

I think CO2 is a reaction on and not the cause of global warming, and then the global warming I'm talking about is caused mostly buy sun activity, vulcano activity, switching of earths poles etc.

Jabbs

How much power does a PC use?  500watt power supply would be the same as 5 100watt bulbs in your house.

Off the top of my head I can't remember what that equates to in money spent and eco 'un' friendliness.
Start Folding and get yourself one of those nice new badge thingies, it\'s a good cause.  Check out the stats

I'm not too convinced about the Global Warming thing, but more concerned with the consumption of (limited) resources.
I don't have much folding atm.

DarkAngel

Folding@home's  CO2 emissions are merely 1.8x10-7  (18 millionths of 1 percent ) of the worldwide total of all greenhouse gas emissions from all sources (weighted for heat retention/concentration).

The USA and China make up 45% of the emitters and Air Traffic alone making up 3% and i dont see commercial flights saving lives.

I believe the cures that come out of folding@home far outweigh the damage caused by the CO2 emissions.

So ill keep folding and pay my extra few £'s a year :).

indeed the livestock process makes up a total of 18% of emissions....
