If there are 3 modules, there has to be 1 x 512 and 2 x 256 right ?
At least my old mobo had problems with different size of modules, I had to run it in 2 x 512 to get 1024 in total. I really can't explain it, but maybe this is a same kind of situation.

I find Everest is a very useful program to tell you about what kind of hardware you have in your pc.  You dont have to install it, just run the everest.exe application file from CD, hard disk, flash drive or whatever.

http://www.lavalys.com/

Simply run the program and look down the left hand side for Motherboard and it will tell you exactly what you have.  You can even copy and past information from it into (for instance) a post on here.

EDIT: The downloaded version I have has to be installed it seems - gonna test to see whethere it runs on another pc without installing now

question: does the memory have chips on both sides or just one.. certain older boards had issues ready memory moduls with chips on both sides, after a bit of forum browsing, the ASROCK K7S8XE v1 seems to be one of em..

well i can find a site with the BIOS for the K7S8XE, but apperently there is about 7 different revisions of the mother board, so gotta be sure im finding the right one for you :) flashing with the wrong bios can brick your motherboard

But the new ones are covered with something.

Those chips are 256Mb chips. That means if you fit two then you have 512Mb of RAM. How many chips to you have fitted to your motherboard? If two then you DO only have 512Mb ram. You would need to buy 2 x 512Mb chips to get 1Gb of RAM

I'll be looking in to this.
I gave him some RAM I bought at the LAN and should have some DDR2 RAM still laying around from my last upgrade from my Shuttle.

I guess he really wants to play L4D hehe...

I do have 2 chips of 512Mb but they dont fit in.
They are just a little bit too big. Is that possible ?
Now i have 768Mb on 3 chips.
And i can play L4D but grapics are not that good.
Do you have some idea's.

DuVeL

It seems his motherboard uses standard DDR memory and the 2 I gave him were DDR2 so that's why they don't fit.
I still had some old DDR laying around so now he has 3x 256MB.

Got to say, his comp is allready several years old now. L4D does work now but not at it's best.
My suggestion would be to save the computercase, get a new motherboard, graphix card and memory (and check if the powersupply can handle it). Seems loads of these are getting cheaper due to the recession.
And also for him to get more diskspace.

Might be an idea that if he wants to get some new parts to post how much he's willing to spend.

So bro, as your comp is allready more then 5 years old, do you want to get a new one or upgrade this setup?
