try going into the bios - sometimes the simple act of accessing the bios allows the memory configuration to be updated or you may have to press F1

da_Ricci

I did go in to bios and i did what you told me to do.
But still there is no more then 512MB.
Very weird if you ask me?
What can i do more.

What have you got installed memory wise?

Do you know if your motherboard will support the upgrade?

Do yo know the make and model of the motherboard?

Is the memory clicked into place?

Its an XP2600+ CPU so I guess he'll be on DDR2 - IIRC DDR3 will not physically fit in a DDR2 slot.

True BB.
Maybe he bought DDR3 instead off DDR2.
So ricci go search for some info bout your motherboard.

You can also dl cpu-z with this you can check your mem,and post some screen shots.

The Athlon XPs only ever ran DDR1, which nobody ever really stocks these days. Even my (when I bought it) top end mobo for an Athlon XP 4000+ only ever took DDR1. So chances are if he's bought memory from a normal retail outlet it'll be DDR2, which is why it won't be working. I'm guessing DDR1 and DDR2 share a slot layout?

Nope, different form factor:

The notch on DDR2 DIMMs is in a different position to DDR DIMMs, and the pin density is slightly higher than DDR DIMMs. DDR2 is a 240-pin module, DDR is a 184-pin module.

Carr0t

Hmm. Not sure how he'd have managed to installed the wrong type then. Maybe it is the right kind after all.

Sometimes, older motherboards have issues reading two or more modules if they are of larger size (which the modules are if you compare to the day the mobo is from) or even just 1 module if its a large module.

what modules do you have installed now?
two 512mb?

One thing you could try is go to the motherboard manufatures site and have a look, and maybe update your bios.
If you need help with this ill be happy to assist you, email address you can find under my contact info.

There are 3 Memory sticks in there right now there's no place for 1 more.
What would that be total??
Do you have a free site to upgrade te bios so i can try that.
Thanks for the help guys.

Well, you say you got 3 modules in it now?

Then the motherboard probably aint the Chaintech 7KJD, as that only has two sockets as shown on the picture below.

i sent my mail address in a pm, could you send me the dxdiag?
