Quote from: The Moose;276338I've decide the way for me to approach it is completely forget about the championships.  I'm not someone who is going to spend all week practising and doing only 1 or 2 races.  That's just a complete waste of a good sim imo.

Don't worry.
I'm not sure if any of you know, but they changed how personal points are calculated this season. Only the Top 50% of your weekly races counts towards the championship. Half of your races are dropped. Dropped races shows up as red in the result screens.

This is to make people race more without being afraid of loosing a race or two.

Well, the trial code finally arrived.  Hmm.  I'm still getting used to how it feels (different from LFS, but aren't all sims different from one another in feel), but my initial thoughts are that the track quality is excellent; not too sure about the cars.  Solstice feels dull.  The ZZ Top wagon (Legends) is, well, everything you'd expect from a ZZ Top wagon... and the Spec Racer Ford has a mind of its own.  The Radical seems to be a much nicer car, shame I wouldn't be able to drive it competitively for about 1000 years.

Might feel different in a few days.  The green text at the top is very very annoying though.  No real need to spank you every time you come off, they could just tell you off at the end of the session.  FFS, you *know* you just spun it or hit the gravel without some officious little message at the top of the screen.

My feelings are that this may be a very nice sim if you are a good driver, but it's priced as a practice tool not as an online game.  It's certainly not that welcoming to rookies.

Still, at least it's not cost me money to find that out. :)

You're in trouble now spoong! :lmfao:

Naturally, since posting that I've been constantly online at LRP in the rookie Solstice doing practice laps.

Indecisive of Hadfield

Glad to hear you've tried it! :)

I'd definitely recommend spending some more time with the Spec Racer before you give up on it. Maybe try a different set. (Vobler posted one earlier) Moose didn't like it much at first either, but once you grow accustomed to it it's a total blast!

The learning curve is steep indeed, as you mentioned. But I think a lot of what you learn in iRacing will carry a positive spillover effect when you go back to other sims. For example iRacing seems to punish you a lot more severely for any mistakes you make. You really have to be gentle with the footwork and balancing the car.

I'm going to make the most of the trial, for sure. :)  I just keep getting annoyed with it, but then 30 minutes later I'm back for another go...

What he said :)

You just have to learn how to drive it. There's no car in LFS that compares to the driving style needed to keep the SRF in check.   It's actually very much like the FF1600 in nKPro, driving style wise.    Always on at least 25% power, smooth coming off the brakes.   Left foot braking is essential to drive it fast and keep it from spinning out imo.

Best tips for stability are having a stiffer front ARB than the rear, more +Toe at the rear, more caster tightens it up a bit as well.

It took me a while to suss it out, but I've won all 6 races I entered in it this week at Laguna, with only 1 incident point in total.

It just needed some offline practice to get some confidence with how it handles.

Keep an eye on the England section of the iRacing forum.  Richard Towler is starting up training sessions.
I was stuck at 1.40.3's all week.  I spent 40 mins with Richard and pulled out a 1.39.9 the next day, purely because of what he taught me.  That's the 6th fastest time done in a practice session all week, out of 1093 drivers.  :yahoo:

Just goes to show your never to experienced to learn something.

Stick with it.  The SRF is a sensational little vehicle.  I so glad they gave us this as the advanced rookie car instead of the advanced Solstice.

Amazing stuff, Stu. :D Richard appears to be not only fast, but also a very nice chap. What sims did he play prior to iRacing, do you know? Have you met him before?

No, never met him before.

The only sim i know he raced was NR2003, but I'm sure he's raced others.

iRacing is far from perfect and is way overpriced for what it is.. (...)

You must have some problems with your keyboard because you missed this in your quoting:

"but at least you see developements every few months and you can find a race when you want one. That's worth the entrance fee in itself. "

*checks keyboard*

Nope, perfectly fine.
