So as we progress into an age or at least for the time being, alot of films released are being shown in 3d both on dvd and in cinemas but for now more commonly the latter. I am therefore beginning to ask myself what are 3d specs and what different types there are and whether its worth investing in some.

Has anyone bought any or had any good/ bad experiences?

They're pretty cheap anyway but in all honesty I am not sure what i am looking for, are there different colours for example?

Maybe we can do a bulk buy and hand them out to people at the lan if people are interested?

When I was in USA I bought Coraline on BD and it included the 3D version and four sets of glasses. I will have a look later and report back.

3 D movies are about the following:

stopping piracy.

It has nothing to do with making the movie going experience better or being able to tell a bette story. A few childrens CGI movies might be improved by being in 3D but not much else.

And the film maker/dustributor is happily expecting you to pay for this new technology by paying higher ticket prices for 3D films. They have no intention of footing the bill themselves. They'll make plenty of additional profit stopping piracy but that extra money is theirs and it seems they're keeping it. So we pay for to solve their problem.

The worst thing to do would be to encourage them by buying glasses and or paying the inflated ticket prices. Chimpboy and I went to see Beowulf in 3D. It was novel and it was no more expensive than a 2D film. But I've also seem it on Blye ray and it's still basically the same film it was at the cinema. 3D added very little to the story.

Some things will benefit from 3D. Some games, some TV and some movies by their nature will be better experiences than if they were left as 2D efforts. However the copyright owner isn't going to pay any attention at all to the artistic merits or otherwise of making their product 3D. They're going to do it reagrdless and just to stop their piracy problem and make more money out of us.

Say no to 3D. You know it makes sense!

I've seen a few movies in the Cinema in 3D, at first because I wanted to see how they did it, and second to see how it varies between 3D for a real film and 3D for a CGI film etc.

Firstly in the cinema it is done in the cheapest way possible. 2 Projectors. One projects the right eye one projects the left. Without the glasses you see a blurry overlap of the two. With them you see 3D.
The glasses filter out the other channel because the lenses have opposite chirality circular polarisation so each image can only pass through one lens.

On computers Nvidia is working on glasses that sync upto the screen so rather than 60fps it needs 120fps. Left eye takes 60 and right eye takes 60 so it looks as smooth as before. The glasses then block off one eye at a time for 1/120th of a second. When it's blocked off your eye still sees and image as the brain can distinguish between the two images to sees a combination of the two. Game scene + Blank scene = Game scene.
So the screen in showing alternating Left - Right images so without the glasses looks as blurry as the cinema screen.

As for DVDs and Blu-ray I haven't tried these, I can't see a way other than the standard Red-Blue way. Though that is a step backwards in many ways as it is essentially the same as watching a movie in black and white because much of the colour information is lost.

3D monitors and are coming and soon and they'll be great. I think they should start coming properly late next year or in 2011 I think. These won't need glasses, which is where things get interesting. A game with glasses doesn't know where your head is. If you move your perspective you see the same thing, If you're looking at a face you'll see the face looking 3D but you won't be able to see any more of it. So the natural leaning to the left and the right to look past stuff is as useless in 3D as 2D when using glasses (though with TrackIR or similar I'm sure something could be worked out because the glasses would make a good tracking point. I'm not sure if they already do this actually, it would make sense).

I didn't realise they were so cheap. I might get one of these with my phd money in September. If I have enough left over after getting a Novint falcon.

They do a special attachment for that. It's an awesome eye patch, hook and peg leg bundle, I don't think they take that market seriously enough.

I watched Coraline 3D today. The movie is in full colour but enhanced with the classic red/green 3D so you need red/green glasses to see the depth. Works pretty ok, but has the same problem as the old 3D that you feel the pain in your eyes.

From extended use?

Basically is 3d only meant for a 15 minute flick in MGM studios in Disney or for full length films?

Those nvidia glasses are still pretty pricey and from what i have heard they aren't fully compatible with everything yet.
