Ok so its October and theres a game drought.

Well the industry thinks so anyway.

So where are we at.

We have several possible games we could look at:

  • Battlefield heroes
  • Modern Warfare 2
  • Need for Speed Shift
  • Op Flashpoint 2
So lets look at these in more detail

  • This is a free game which i loaded up and tried in beta some months ago. Its free and is cartoony. Its rather like TF2 which wasn't much success in our community. Its reliant on match making and so its not too much of a good idea for our own dedicated server. However it has objectives most gamers do not have comms but there were very few gamers of the 4 hour trial i gave the game that had clan tags. So is it a dmw game? Well it has the heart of battlefield and it feels very much like an rpg and it might be stepping on the wow and aion section toes because of this. We don't need a server as such as its reliant on match making however it is still free. T-bag and I are beginning further play testing this week.
  • I think we should possibly think about keeping a close eye on this. Yes our community don't agree with matchmaking but from what i can see the game has all the right attributes for a deadmen game. If we can install a server and get it running for free i reckon its worth a shot however if its not a goer we may need to leave it well alone. But if we can get a free server up it might attract business even if its vacant and make people stumble upon the forum due to server messages and look how tokyo brought in business over the weeks it was new.
  • This game has been a favourite of my for some weeks. I took it to the lan had a spark of inspiration and it flew round the lan room. The reason why was because i found a new patch to make it lan playable. Now if we can get a server up for the demo and if the demo is multi-playable i reckon people will play this however i need feedback from the DMR section head i think it's lameduck as to whether this sort of game should even be approached. It could work and aslong as we have a teamspeak/ vent server i reckon people will really enjoy it.
  • I need further discussion with dewey/ arm/ whitey about arma 2 / op flashpoint. The industries view is that opf2 is less buggy and more of a game. arma 2 was exceptionally buggy at the start and many people dropped the game early on. It was given bad rep. Now opf2 has matchmaking again so i would like clarification as to what to do about opf2.
Thats all for Now,

4. I have Op Flashpoint 2 and have been playing it quite a bit. As a single player game it's AI is a bit buggy with a rather crap squad control system.

As far as I am aware the game does not allow dedicated servers so it makes hosting our own server impossible (I stand to be corrected, probably by a any Codemasters update).

This game competes directly with Arma2 and while it has better graphics the two games are very similar. However Arma2 has dedicated servers, mission/map editor  and a co-op mode.

I really like the idea of hosting a game where we play on the same team. It makes it quite distinct from CS:S, COD4 etc. It also means that Arma2 won't directly compete with these other FPS games being co-op rather than versus. Therefore my humble opinion is that we see if Arma2 floats before we consider OP FP2. Otherwise I just think they will compete too much with each other for players, and neither may take hold as a result.

MW2 has that same problem at the moment, no dedicated server which makes it impossible to run a dMw server.  The option of running a dMw private server from a home connection is laughable imo.  Seriously disappointed in their server support for it thus far, we'll wait and see if the backlash & cancelled orders hits them hard enough to change their mind.

We'll be testing BFH soon. As for MW 2 I'm think till we can be sure there will be the ability to join a dedicated server it's a non-starter. Gameplay wise it's perfect for us though. So if this feature is added I'd suggest this be moved to the top of the list of suggestions even with a price of Ã,£35 I'm sure many (inc myself) will buy it. CoD 4 has been good value.

As for Need for Speed I prefer Grid which has a reasonable online gameplay. I'm not sure about dedicated servers etc, and because of it's more arcade nature I guess this would sit well with current drivers because it doesn't compete too directly but might be a nice cross-over game.

After playing the demo of Arma II I don't feel it's in a finished state. After a few patches I guess this game would warrant further testing. As for Op Flashpoint if it uses matchmaking it makes it rather difficult to integrate into the community.

T we played ARMA2 last night. The interface is a bit clunky, but it plays well.

I'd be willing to give ArmA2 a go.  I have OFP2 and I think the gameplay would work quite well so if these are similar games, but ArmA2 has dedicated servers, then ArmA2 seems the sensible choice.

LAN damage along with other games like L4D2 mean I'll need to check my finances before shelling out... missing out on the ArmA2 special offer didn't help. :(

Based on one go, I'd go with Arma 2. The multiplayer model works well. The missions are already out there and we already have the server.

What we need is the push to get players. It's slower paced and certainly challenging. I have a feeling that I'm going to get all 'cod' and want lower numbers of players on, but it's a tactical, technical FPS and one I think we could do worse than to really push.

Great,

So leading on from this can we get a arma 2 server up or have we already got one up?

I have tried need for speed shift and the demo doesn't have multiplayer support so we would need full licenses to give it a go for Ã,£12.25 on ea downloader.

Would having this game supported be bad for our dmr side or not?

It was popular at the lan so i don't see why it can't be popular within the community except for the high steam price.

c'mon GhostM, you're slipping already!

We have an Arma2 server up and running...we were on it last night. Worked a treat. Kinda.

I knew you would try and over throw me Benny.

Just 24 hours in and your already moaning :narnar:

Can we add the arma 2 details to the server password thread and maybe a post in news/ announcements may help grow server numbers.

Ok had a chat with lameDuck over PM about nfs shift.

He wants us to steer clear from adopting it in dmw due to its gameplay and I respect his desicion as dMR is his section.

I have posted his comments below:

QuoteHi Ghosty,
The racing section members are only interested in simulators and not racing games such as NFS Shift.
It has been mentioned on the forum, but only with derision. My comment was that there was one 'f' too many in the title.
Having played NFS some years ago, the scene is full of wreckers, cheats, hackers and ner do wells' and despite trying multiplayer for 6 months I never had one evening of decent competition without meeting a few of them. One of the reasons I started LFS and found salvation in dMw having met Oldie there.
Good luck with your app searches. If we hear about new sims , I'll give you a shout, as dMr members are genned up on whats coming up or in development.
Regards
Bob
QuoteHi Mr duck,

As section head for dmr i would like your feedback as to trialling need for speed shift inside our community.

I have started a discussion about various games and would value your feedback

I can appreciate LameDuck's view, however to play devil's advocate I would point out that the people NFS is likely to appeal to are probably not racing section members, and perhaps would never enter into the more serious sim racing in any case?

The game may have a large number of cheaters etc, but it's not alone in that regard and that's why we police all of our servers in the first place.

Done.  Also added to home page.

Agree with Boon. Grid and NFS probably wouldn't work withing the dMw racing community. The do seem to be SIM racers not arcade racers, which is cool. However that doesn't mean we can't try them amongst the wider community.

I was saying much the same to ghost earlier. It's more of a crossover game than a direct competition. Plus if you look at CS:S, CoD 4 and L4D all working side by side people can handle more than one game.

Are there any decent flight combat games out there that are worth a punt?

It seemed to me that some of the popularity of BF2 was that it added a different dimension - vehicles and aircraft. People seemed to like that hence the ridiculous queuing on the flight deck for example.

It would be different and I think could be popular?
