At the lan i had a brief chat with TL and OB about how we can attract new members.

One idea which OB mentioned was to go on other clan websites and gently advertise who we are and what we do.

Essentially in this months pc zone as a matter of fact a letter came in from a clan leader for a clan known as the DAD clan.

This clan are essentially dad's and want to play with other mature and respectful people. The clan is as such drying up and Dean Jones letter tries to ask for a "who are we" section in the magazine.

So every month a clan is profiled and we could get a fair few members in the process in the section if we are shown. This is an ideal opportunity for us and OB i think said Pen has a background in PR so if your available Pen can get an email over to them?

So may i humbly suggest that we get an email off to Ali wood the editor of pc zone to say "who we are" and what we do.

Another idea may also be to approach the DAD clan and see if they could either merge with us or brighten up out servers.

I'll give their server a go and report back

ali's email is letters@pczone.co.uk

Nice idea. Although I think we need to be clear that we're a community and not a clan and therefore are not trying to poach members from other clans. Something I'm sure we're all aware of :)

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

The Dad clan - I like it worth a mail to them for sure.

I've not seen or read PC zone but the demographic seems spot on (see pic). I don't know the mag nor is there an online back copy I could find.

Is the profile thing happening? Your post is a bit unclear whether it's been asked for, or asked for and is happening.

I'm happy to speak to them and can try to sell in a story. If they do a profile then it would have a lot more leverage in it than a letter imo.

I'm blind here as I have no idea about content or features but dMw has enough of a membership and a history to portentially make an interesting case study I would have thought and the hook of the mature gamer/maturity is potentially interesting Also, the two-generation thing may have some mileage....

I'd rather not have to write it - Besides which there's a wealth of talent here who could write it just as well and probably better :)

I'll ask them for a media pack.

In the meanwhile here's the demographic:

Hi Pen,

Basically Dean wrote into Pc zone asking ali the editor of pc zone whether she could make a new section for who are they. A section dedicated to gaming cland or in our case gaming community.

As she has never had such a request before she put a small ad in the mag in the form of his letter and a snipet saying that anyone who wanted to be advertised or have themselves profiled for a month should write in.

Therefore i suggest we write in as you suggest as this would be more effective than an email to show who we are and what we do.

If the response to her request for this who are we is high she will begin profiling communities or clans regularly.

If we get in early we may have a chance of being shown.

Not until someone steps up to the plate and agrees to write it. :)

As I said, I'll happily try and sell in the story but I really don't want to write it.

It would be unprofessional to do one without the other being in place tbh.

The deadline for print is fast approaching of this months issue of pc zone.

The sale date for this month's issue is 25th November.

Ali likes to have everything done ahead of schedule and this is an ideal opportunity to sell us.

OB/ TL can you or a senior admin write up something to introduce our community and what we do and pen will add what he thinks could be more appropriate?

I could write something but you the admins led by OB and TL have created what we see here today and i think it should be your privilege to send the letter over to pczone hq.

Let me know if i can help :)

I'll take you up on that offer.

As you have read the article in the magazine you will have a better idea of what is wanted.  If you want to put together a draft of what you think they want to see then I'll be happy to add some work to it and then pass it to Penfold to sell in to the magazine. Much as the privilege is nice, the work that goes with it needs to be offloaded & shared out at the moment.

Currently I do not know if they want a precis of us to then consider us for more thorough research or if they want all the info up front in order to have enough info to write the article without further input.  Seeing what you write first will help and I can add my input to your base.  Send it in a PM and I'll work on it as soon as it arrives and then pass to Penfold in good time for submission prior to the deadline.

Ghosty,

The issue coming out on the 25th Nov will be closed now - I can all but guarantee it. The next issue will be published just before Christmas with (I imagine) a February cover date.

If  you want to submit a letter then that's fine. If we want to try and sell an article into them then we need to come up with a synopsis with an appropriate hook. (This is what we propose, this is why we think it is of interest etc). If you want to go down that route then all we need is a rough synopsis as we obviously can't write a piece without getting a word count from them. I also have no idea if they will accept non-commissioned articles.

As TL has said, we're blind with this as we've never seen a copy and therefore have no idea on house style or content. You'll be best placed to have a stab at something. So decide whether we're going to write a letter or try for an article and we'll take it from there.
