Wiping is not mandatory, but I did anyway. It has a TON of Dalvik upgrades, amongst other things, making this the fastest ROM I have ever tried :) @691MHz I get 5-5.1 in Linpack tests. If only I could run the phone at 768MHz as some can...

Can only say that I second Delan here. I upgraded to FroydVillain 1.5 yesterday (you don't have to wipe btw. if you come from FV 1.4.4), and my Hero is as fast and smooth as it has never ever been before!

It took me *ages* to get 1.4.4 working and looking just as I want it. Will I lose it all by loading 1.5?

They don't guarantee it (standard answer: don't post a bug report if you didn't do a full wipe), but I didn't wipe myself, and from the forum it seems that many others coming from 1.4.4 didn't need a wipe either.

So most likely you're safe to flash 1.5 directly (and thus keeping all your apps and settings etc). And if you just take a nandroid backup first, no harm will be done, since you can just restore that one if something gets messed up.

So just go ahead and give it a try. It is SO worth it :D

Any idea if 1.5 is going to come out via the Villain ROM updater?  The updater has worked superbly for me in bringing me up to 1.4.4, and it would be nice to just not have to manually do 1.5, but I guess it's no major hassle.

Edit:  ignore me, it took me 30 seconds to reflash manually and it rebooted perfectly with no settings lost.  So for OB, if you are on 1.4.4 and going for 1.5 I reckon you'll be ok.  I went with the 691MHz with boot animation ROM.

Thanks for the update guys. I'll give it a go at the weekend.

In terms of the various speed kernels ... I'm confused. If I select, for example, the 691 version and my Hero doesn't like it will it be stable enough to flash a lower clock speed version?

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I believe it is only minor updates (i.e. from 1.4.0 to 1.4.1 and so on) that is (or even can be?) pushed via the Villain ROM Updater. Major upgrades from 1.4 to 1.5 you normally have do download manually yourself. But as you experienced, as long as you don't have to wipe the phone before flashing, it's dead easy :)

The 691MHz kernel is almost for sure not a problem. Almost every Hero owner can run it. However, just be sure to have the zip-files for the various kernels available on your sd card. You'll always be able to boot into recovery and flash a different kernel is you experience problems with the one you're currently running.

And if you forget this, just enable USB-stick functionality in recovery and transfer the appropriate files.
