I am on the lookout for someone who has freephone (or part of a paid for package) access to an ISP where there is no Caller Line ID (this is the bit that will only let you dial up to the ISP from that number).

If you have one, can you let me know ASAP please?

Thanks.

Pay as you go dial up. No sign up, no personal details required at all. They allow ISDN both single and dual. They never used to require CLID to be on-line and there is no reference to it in the T&C. They used to be champions of anonymous surfing and although they have gone way up market I think they still stick to the concept.

Didn't you enquire about this some months ago? Or am I going mad?

OK,I'll explain.  We are currently looking at the viability of running 1.6 at the LAN via the hotel's internet connection.  As it is dial up we would have to pay.  As it is a hotel we would *really* have to pay.  If we have a pre-paid package or a freephone ISP number that will not increase the hotellier's bill, then we have all the access we want.  That, unfortunately, rules out any PAYG operations.

Hopefully that explains more fully what I was looking for from amongst our LAN brethren.

Sorry but I don't know any ISP'sapart from PoBox that don't use CLID.

It's been a while since I use dial up but I remember being able to use my Demon dial up account from any PC. The number I was dialing from didn't matter. As long as what ever number I was using loggable by Demon they were happy from a security/abuse prevention point of view.

Technically as long as we had the phone numer, user name and password for an ISP account that charged a flat rate monthly fee, then we could dial up from anywhere, including the hotel?

I think ?

*That* is the problem, most ISPs will not let you connect from anything other than you registered number.  I have access to plenty of ISPs and plenty of dial ups, but the key is to get dial up access from the hotel to a dial up number that will not cost the hotel anything.

may not be needed anyway as I think we'll be playing 1.5?
(so Oldie is saying)

Aye, but this piece of work is to establish *if* we can play 1.6 instead.  if we do nto solve this problem then yes we will be playing 1.5.  But if it can be arranged that we have an internet connection then *maybe* we might be ablew to sort some 1.6 out for peeps....

It's a long shot in the absence of Steam's LAN option, but I thought it worth a shout.

I understand now. Of course fixed monthly fees use a Surftime enabled number duh. So if the hotel isn't paying for Surftime we're pooped. I was rembering local rate dial up from Demon. I shall go and be quiet in the corner and let you all get on with being bright

I thought my idea re using a GPRS mobile was an option too.  Always on connection, we be doing little in way of data (only steam auth) GPRS is usally billed by the MByte.

Aye, that would do it as long as you figure out a neat way for the whole LAN to connect via your mobile phone.

Hey TL. My Nilly connection has backup 0845 dialup. I let my in-laws use it to connect to the net from their house without any problems.

I don't think the call is free but the connection is already paid for. Will that help?

It might do - bring the log in details with you just in case!

If a cheap connection is all you need then uk2.net allow anybody to connect using their "penny a minute" connection. Full details at http://adial.co.uk/

i use this as my "backup" connection when everyone else is knackered. Works a treat and you do not need to register - anyone can use it whenever they want :)

I think TL wanted an 0800 number, as in 0p per min.

TL, my phone dont do GPRS.... not at the mo anyway.  You would use any old internet connectoin sharing software on said pc with internet connection.

Chaps. It aint worth the hassle.

1.5 works well on a LAN. It takes 10 mins to fully install.

If a Steam-free LAN patch is released before Friday then all well and good but for now think 1.5 cos even if we get a connection to the net then I predict nothing but pain and grief as Steam does its usual.
