Damn, I should have gone to Plymouth...... I would have had a ball, 1500 of them!

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

I did this same experiment minus the ping pong balls in a university lab. Though I have no idea what would happen. I put the bottle in a sink with a wet cloth over it to catch the lid (which I assumed was going to pop off). I also put a ceiling tile over the top of the sink for extra safety (it was in a nanotechnology lab after all).

It didn't go off at first and then when we least expected it. A loud pop and a cloud of dust. Managed to tidy it up without any lectures or postgrad supervisors coming in. Then noticed the bottle had gone straight through the ceiling leaving a perfectly bottle shaped hole. Switched it out for one in a nearby dark corridor and relaxed again. Would not recommend. It does not (repeat: NOT) make a cool instant cloud of water vapour or any other of the things I was imagining when I set it up. Drink bottles are MUCH stronger than you might think.

Only damage was a few of the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) images had a line in them caused by the loud noise.
