I'm watching from the sideline in a sort of 'might need something to fill my gaming life between now and SC release' way :P

£100 for beta access seems extreme to me (yeah, I know about SC!), so I'll wait and see.

Well I took a punt on  both, as I was hedging the bets.

That's why I'm not so keen on Elite and on Braben himself. SC gave you a choice as to how much you spent. Braben doesn't. I've always suspected (with absolutely no real evidence to back the idea up ) that he's about making lots of money rather than about making the greatest game. Paying £100 for the priviledge of helping to bug fix their game seems a very grubby and 'Brabenesque' idea. I'll pass.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

I'm not saying I won't end up playing it, but I felt the price point was the issue.   They were selling £200 alpha slots earlier!

I admit to preferring the SC model, lower entry cost, then up to you how much you spend in backing the game - the Elite entry price level for alpha is almost six times the SC price level.

I'll probably end up playing it anyway, but I might wait until the $40 game is released instead!

I pledged £25 whilst back in the UK and got â,¬42 off the â,¬120 Premium Beta pack. Which is for Premium Beta, Game Download license and ALL DLC for the full game (normally â,¬40). The deal is awesome. â,¬38 for the 6 possible months of beta is value to me given Alpha 4.01 was totally playable if the 40 mins on you tube are anything to go by. You've already set expectation that the SC alpha may be unplayable but the point of alpha is to stablise the product. I think you will be pleasantly surprised how fast SC alpha becomes fun.

In the end I want a drop on and off space flight game with little complexity hence Elite.

Edit: I'm in love with this game already and I've hardly done the training scenarios :) Can't wait to fail docking 100 times before nailing it!

I just got this as a way to better judge SC. ( and that it was my first space game on my BBC computer in 1984-85, I needed to support that)
I like it, it is much slower paced than SC, feels " simpler" in a good way. Less cluttered, less turn speed. Has realtime "jumps" etc. But I can't say that it is better, I think that will depend on how we play it.

Feels good anyway.

Two totally different takes on the same genre. Easily room for both.

Totally agree with OB. Meanwhile. I ordered one of these for use with Flight Sims and Elite, maybe the odd FPS. Arma seems to be greatly enhanced by this. The video looks awesome.

I've been hovering over the 'BUY' button for a Track IR too!   Arma is defintely enhanced by it and I can see it going down great in not just Arma but also the new race sims (AC and Project Cars) as well as the space sims.     Track IR plus the voice commands should make the next 12-24 months super interesting on the gaming front!

As for Elite, I've been unable to rationalise my two totally conflicting and illogical opinions:

  • £200 for the Elite alpha access was, I felt, extortionate.
  • I felt that £100 for the Beta Access package was expensive.
  • But I thought that several hundred pounds on Star Citizen vaporware was great value.
Go figure!

It's mad I know, but that's the way my brain has latched on to SC, there's something in it that has grabbed my attention!  Having said that, I will almost certainly buy Elite: Dangerous once it is released.   I loved the original BBC model B game and feel the need to play it again, but my interim beta dollars are headed to SC not Elite.

I diverted the Alpha money to the TrackIR fund and only got the Beta, not regretting the Beta so far, apart from the AI ship in the Conflict Missions I just simply cannot kill The Crimson Triumph, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2ccMZWEBw0 now that I have by Flight Stick setup. I beat this guy after 3 tries with a mouse. He's really difficult to shake when he gets behind you. The TrackIR should help me, but also landing in the Coriolis Spaceport is supposed to be made better by improving the view. This guy got an easy landing pad directly ahead.

I use TrackIr, and that is one of the problems with AC. It does not work yet. In Elite on the other hand it is gorgeous! Relay good, like when you look down to the sides the UI panels pop up, no need to press anything. Nice. Inside a Spaceport it is easy to spot your dock and land. Dogfighting, much easier to stay on the tails, because you look up and can easy adjust thrust and angle of attach.

As a multiplayer coop game, I think Elite has much less to offer than SC. It is not seem to designed towards that, but as a single player multiplayer (!) it might work. One man, one ship in a huge universe. The only gripe I have now, is that it is impossible to do trading without losing your cargo to pirates. Even over a few runs, with winning fights with the pirates, the hull repairs is costing more than I am earning.

Still, it is very good to have until SC/AC matures. I expect the trading bugs to be fixed soon. And as they expand the universe, it is a nice game to have.
