Spending most of my day working with networks lately, there seems to be something I've missed completely. Can anyone give me a decent reason why a 5 meter length of 5e is insufficient for a connection between an access switch and a client? Have you lot invested in 10GBASE-T access ports?
Despite having a rather new motherboard (Asus Z87 Sabertooth, with an Intel® I217V NIC), there's no support for those kinds of speed on it. Its a 1GBASE-T NIC. Cat5e is certified for 1GBASE-T in stretches up to 100 meters (and will do full duplex at stretches up to 30 meters), so despite Cat6 being only 20% more expensive, can someone give me a reason why I should go through the hassle of buying one when I have a store room full of brand new 5e in various lengths? I fail to see how using cables that neither the switch nor the NIC's can fully utilize increases stability.
Yes, for people having to buy new cables, or people unsure of the quality of their cables, 6e (when did that become a recognized standard by the way? It wasn't when I first looked into getting one) is the better choice. Futureproof and all that, but it's not really necessary until we're at 10gigabit across the board.

I agree with Faust as none of us will get 10 GIG but.....

I think the undertone is that people wanted to find a way to make everyone buy new cabling due to the problems cause from past LANs where people have been using the same old cable time after time, getting slowly more tatty till it has faults which are a nightmare of the LAN network without managed switches.

There will be testing carried out... My order still not has arrived for my spool of cat6 and if if doesn't I am planning on bringing a new CAT 5e cable in its packaging for inspection by Toby or whoever has the tester. Hell I will bring my tester too!

Oh hush you silly Viking.

You're using all those technical words which I don't understand which is a little distressing as it's not even your mother tongue.

DZ (miraculously some may say), has put it very succinctly. We have had problems over the last few lans with bad cabling so it's more of an general request to upgrade. Don't worry about bringing a cat6 cable. I appreciate it's very heavy so I'll bring you one along with the power supplies and other stuff you can't be arsed to bring yourself.

Would you like me to provide anything else? My first born for ritual sacrifice perhaps.

Look forward you to seeing you (ish).

I believe you are referring to this line with in the packing instructions?

QuoteEthernet cable - preferably as long as you can get (10m would be great) and Cat6e IS THE NEW STANDARD PLEASE

Thank you for pointing this is out as it is a mistake I hastily edited the post and forgot to delete the "e" off. Your correct it hasnt been ratified, CAT6A has.  I have edited the post.

Also DZ has got it right the reason why we are suggesting to use CAT6 mainly to get rid of duff cables and we also wanted to hammer home the point that there will be no spares at the LAN.

In passing we have suggesting the use of the CAT6 for as long as I have been helping with running them and it seems only now that we are having a issue with this??

Maybe it is the way I have communicated what we were trying to achive but alas I failed it again. Anyway I hope that has cleared this up.

There was the matter of the goat and the alcohol-resistant lipstick we talked about. Were you able to procure those? Oh, and I also seem to have misplaced the frog repellant...
To answer a previous question, no, the sex of the goat doesn't matter. GhostMjr will be surprised either way.

At my place of work we now are using cat7 cabling for cloud related companies and is fast becoming the standard, if your interested I will explain more over a beer at the lan as to why and the difference.

For the purpose of gaming at the lan Cat5. Cat5a, Cat6 or even cat7 copper cables are good enough for what is required. Just make sure it is not 5 years old and not had a kitten/dog/child  chewing on the end. At the end of the day these are copper cables which are very durable although limited for what you want to do.... Fiber is a whole different story.

Still waiting for mine too arrive just would be nice to have new cables in my opinion, fingers cross for everything network related to go smoothly :)

Guys, I'm seriously low on luggage space this LAN due to a USB hub and Joystick and Throttle coming. Unless I can find a really good packing method I may not be bringing cheese this time round.
I may also need to borrow a LAN cable but we'll see. I have my Samsung ATIV to bring as my command and control screen as well. So after the cheese getting dropped the LAN cable is next.
Trouble is there are now too many delicate parts to pack in a laptop case, TrackIR etc.

Sorry.
Cheers,
Bert
