Attendees of the LAN, we are ever trying to make the LAN better and better and we have noticed that quite a number of our Cables are pretty old and used.

So we have purchased some for the back bone of the network, Switch to switch, Servers etc.  But all extra have been or in the process of being destroyed.

So Please please please can you make sure that you have your own CAT6 cable, we will be testing each cable as they are being used with a tester.

It is very important as we will not have any spare that you bring your cable.  You can get them from Amazon see our afflitate link:

Thank you for reading this and looking forward to seeing you all at the LAN!!!

You only need one.

We've bought all the infrastructure cabling so it's only a case of connecting your machine to the network.

The longest run between the end of a table and a switch is 18ft which is just over 5M so 5M or 10m would be fine.

Whatever you choose PLEASE DO NOT BUY ORANGE CABLES AS THIS IS THE COLOUR  OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE ONES.

Plenty to choose from here: http://astore.amazon.co.uk/deadmenwalkin-21/search?node=41&keywords=cat+6+cable&x=14&y=5&preview=

Thanks

I may bring a spool with me as the plan is to wire the house with CAT 6 when we get the keys so there may be some left over.

Already discussed this with Chaos and Peanut.

I am a little bit confused about this after a conversation with Toby on the make your own cable vs buying pre-made.

It sounds like making your own is not preferable to buying a crappy ebay special or cheap sweatshop made cable from amazon. TBH I have more confidence on my own ability to do a good job over mass produced cheap tat. I agree that stability is important and having poor cabling may cause issues, however spending £5 from amazon on a length of cable is just as likely to fail at the LAN rather than using a higher grade spool if you know what you are doing when cutting and crimping cables. Having spent the outlay for a tester, crimper and a spool I am a little confused to why we are expected to invest in a subsequent purchase of potentially something of inferior quality materials and potentially poorer build quality. Granted there is more comeback as you can send the cabling back to EBay or amazon if faulty however if it breaks at the LAN its too late to get a replacement.

I agree with thought behind it as we all want a more stable network at the LAN, but ultimately enforcing this type of thing will cause more problems. Buying a pre-built PC doesn't mean you will get a better more reliable PC than if you build it yourself. Its the same for these cables, the sum of their parts and build need to be taken into account.

Rant over...

Without wishing to over-simplify the conversation, I think all we needed was to make sure everyone turns up with a decent length network cable to plug into the switch.

Also some of us international attendees would love to borrow some power cables for our laptop adapters etc. I only require 1 standard PSU cable myself :)
