Help to fund the thing, get a limited time trophy.

Done my bit :D

I won't be getting one - seems like a money making scam to me.

To be fair to them, they have said that this is to help pay for the cost of the event.  I think it says it on the purchase page int he item description.

QuoteTo help cover the cost of the event, we’ve created this trophy you can display in your hangar. It will be a great way to show how you’ve been active in the community!

Available for purchase through the event… and after that, they’re gone forever!

This is true, but why should I sub an event on the other side of the planet to where I'm located and have zero change of getting to?
To the people who do buy this item: is this a one off or will you sub other events dotted around the globe as well?

Gorion

Well, I always buy whatever flair/trophy items available.

a) You're supporting - it's a bloody $5
b) You get a one off flair item in game
c) It's unique - there won't be any more
d) You can always sell it - gamescon 2943 trophies are listed for $70 on grey market.

It's a bone if contention selling rubbish like this to fund an event which is really an essential marketing opportunity and would have been attended and funded normally through pledge money. I'd prefer they don't word this item description "a great way to show you've been active in the community" and be honest and fund our beer 😆

I have to agree, it does smack of profiteering. They will create lots of interests being there and don't need to keep asking for more money. It's as disingenuous as Chris Roberts endlessly stating that they can only produce Ten for the Chairman, Jump Point etc through extra donations. They could pay for it from the interest they're earning on the last million they received. I can understand more money unlocking FPS planet content, more ships, better AI etc. But not a jolly down to Australia, hotels, bar bills, entertainment etc etc. If they want to sell 'real' branded stuff from the event then that's fine, sell me a mug, a t-shirt or an 'actually real strange looking lump of perspex'. But don't try to convince me that I have to buy a bit of digital code to allow them to attend.

I hope they're not sitting there thinking "Hey people are throwing money at us, let's find new ways to keep them doing so, regardless of the wonderful state of our bank balance". We're free to buy what we like of course, but I've paid enough money for now. Hopefully it's just an idiot in in Marketing having an off day. If not then it definitely takes the sheen off of 'Can do no wrong Mr. Roberts' and leaves a grubby taste in the mouth.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

I'm not sure at all that it is profiteering, remember the purchase price is not forced on you.  Do you want to support the game or its marketing during development?  I do, I'm a subscriber.  They didn't force me to become a subscriber, I chose to be one.  Similar reasons as to why some people in dMw decide to become supporting members, they chose to support the common goal.

I think what we're getting at is spend your dev time on the game, our pledges on making it better and marketing it and don't waste your time making pointless trophies and coming across ungrateful.

I accept your point, but at the same time the very people backing the game have demanded these events and they have proved a useful way of generating huge publicity for the game which in turn makes it easier to fund the lofty goals.  I see it as synergistic.

Well, I don't mind paying $5 for something limited in the game, and support it at the same time.

I look at it this way, it's the price of a cheap burger.  Should I eat the burger, or buy the trophy?

I totally agree, they must be at this type of event, it will boost pledges and show to the backers in each show location that they matter. Just don't kid on with silly funding objects and imply if folks don't buy the thing they're not loyal contributors. Sad fact is they could put a turd on a virtual trophy and many would buy it. Maybe they should do an Elite Launch trophy in Star Citizen and see if it sells!

Well, you can also buy one, then sell it on the grey market in a couple of months..
