Hi all,

A quick couple o questions from a hopeful LAN debutant.

What time do people start turning up on the Friday?
What time do people start turning up on the Saturday?
What is the eating arrangements?
What is the drinking arrangements? - Can I bring my own booze?
Do I have to have all the LAN games?
Do I need to bring my whole setup? Or just my tower?
Should I bring spare parts? Wires etc.
Is anyone coming from SE Kent that wants to car share?
Do I book my room through you guys, or through the hotel?
How much is roughly spent in one weekend?

Thanks in advance,

Adam

  • What time do people start turning up on the Friday?  Anytime they like but lots turn up on Thursday night
  • What time do people start turning up on the Saturday? Usual they dont unless being social as comps start around 10:30
  • What is the eating arrangements? Thursday ususal a big group go for curry. BUt you can eat in the hotel or get a take out. Friday stake night, Sat takeout or resturant.  Lunch is up to you.  Breakfast included in room cost.
  • What is the drinking arrangements? - Can I bring my own booze? No in short dont turn up with your own.
  • Do I have to have all the LAN games?  No you can play whatever you want, join in the comps you want to.
  • Do I need to bring my whole setup? Or just my tower? There will be a list of stuff posted up closer to the time.  But basically bring rig no speakers
  • Should I bring spare parts? Wires etc.  Always helpful
  • Is anyone coming from SE Kent that wants to car share?  There will be a post to arrange transport for Int and UK based people with transport needs
  • Do I book my room through you guys, or through the hotel? The booking thread will be opened then you can book the room.  Also has all the cost for room etc.  But you book direct with hotel.
  • How much is roughly spent in one weekend?  Depends on how much you drink. if you share a room and if you come on Thursday or just attend for Friday to Sunday

Rofl, I've only just noticed that you used some of my Rhyolith kill video for the WoW background of part of that video! :roflmao:

Jewelz, to add to what Toby said:

  • people turn up throughout Friday, by mid-afternoon the bar is usually pretty busy and by the time we have our 'steak night' at about 7.30pm we have almost 100% attendance.    However as some many arrive on Thursday night, you're guaranteed to find a whole host of people to welcome you whatever time you arrive.
  • there's a variety of eateries, take aways, pizza shops, kebab shops, fried chicken shops etc near the hotel - you'll not starve.   The only time that everyone eats in the hotel restaurant is Friday night for the steak night (vegetarian options also available).   Other than that, it's up to you to group up and eat whatever you want, but there is always a group of lazy bar stewards (led by me) who cba to leave the hotel and eat hotel food at every meal.  The breakfast is self-service so you can load up for the day pretty well if you want!
  • the hotel is a 'free house', so the bar prices are actually very good.  Â£2.50 per pint is the norm for real ale and every now and then we arrange for a special deal with the hotel and manage to get a keg or two for £1.50 per pint.
  • The big question, how much will it cost you.   Assuming you arrive Friday, eat at the steak night and then including all of your drinks and food for the rest of the weekend is probably about:
£2 x £50 for room: (assuming an expensive single room @ £50 per night, instead the £33 shared twin option)
£30 approx for the steak night (inc a fillet mignon steak and a drink or three; cheaper steak cuts are also available)
£70 bar/shop/take away bill for remainder of weekend

Total: £200 approx

I have done the weekend both cheaper (once) and more expensive, it just depends how much you eat in the restaurant and how much you drink & buy drinks for others.  I tend to buy a number of rounds and I eat in the restaurant almost every meal, so my bill is usually in the £200-250 region which I count as pretty good value for the three day bender![/LIST]
Hope this helps.

All the above is right, and the curry is bloody good.  The hotel steak night is fabulous, and cooked perfectly as ordered.

However, stay away from the pizza place close to the hotel.  It's utter rubbish, and the most horrible pizza I have ever tasted.

Unfortunately, the kebab house isn't that good either.  Had a lamb doner last time, and they put the pitta underneath and threw the meat on top (who does that..).  Meat which was very dry and swimming in oil.  If you still plan on going to eat from there, stick with the shish.

I can assure you Gorion that the pizza place is excellent now.

You have to crouch below the heat to order!

You coming to the Oct LAN?

I'll treat you!

Yeah, planning on coming over with the missus.  We both just managed to find a job, so should be good.  Still have to start working though.

So it's not those two USSR guys running that place now?

Thanks for the feedback all! I shall hopefully see you all there!

Gorion - how dare you. If it wasn't swimming in grease/oil, there would be a very real danger of actually tasting the "meat" underneath. Ever seen a cat in March? Me neither......

My top tip Jewelz, is to get TeaLeaf hammered and keep telling me how great the Atlanta Falcons are. That usually guarantees you a night of free drinks :P

Might have tasted a bit of top hat in there too.  Definitely didn't taste like meat though.

People have eaten cat by mistake instead of rabbit in the past, so that wouldn't be a first I guess.  Still, that lamb pitta was so horrid that I chucked it away; and I don't usually leave anything on my plate to be chucked (Plate remains intact).

Kebabs are just wrong in all ways and should only ever be tried or attempted when drunk. There by you are fooled into thinking it actually tastes good.

They're bloody good over here and in Slovenia.

Even when no alcohol is consumed, so it's a human problem.

It takes a lot to earn my confidence as a kebab customer. That place in March didn't.
