Just a quick one.

Trying to extend my wireless network but the phone socket for my adsl is in one corner of the house.

Can I plug my modem into a switch and connect the router to the switch

[Modem] --------> [switch (which is near the PCs I want hardwired) ] -----------> [wifi Router hardwired to a more central location for better coverage]

Modem: DrayTek Vigor 130 ADSL/VDSL Ethernet Modem   www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00F9E5LQA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Switch: not bought as yet but would this one be ok?  www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-GS105UK-Gigabit-Unmanaged-Ethernet/dp/B0000E5SEQ/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1466494043&sr=8-8&keywords=switch

Router:  ASUS RT-AC88U Wi-Fi AC3100 Dual-Band Router with 8 Gigabit LAN    https:www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B019MKO43M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks

PS: Does this look OK?  www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B019MKO43M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

or even this?  www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-RT-AC3200-Tri-Band-Wireless-Repeater/dp/B00Y2NVH4O/ref=pd_sim_147_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41wfYS-yyEL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=3FHS8VM3NK4Z2FBCX2W1

Thanks

You could try modem, to router and hardwire the pc at the first point then hardwaire a Wireless AP would give the best results unless you need the ports near where the AP is.

I have the same issue, and the walls of my house could withstand a nuke, they are f'ing thick

so i bought one of these so the wife could get wireless in the bedroom (my desktop is wired inthe bedroom, but i run a 20m cable to it, she didnt want that)

these seem to work

there are extra options on the page for pass through as well

My problem is that I need the hardwired ports near the telephone socket which is where the PCs are and then wireless coverage throughout the rest of the house. I currently use wireless extenders but they don't work particularly well for me.

I'm not sure why the fist router here is more expensive than the second?

I had the same issue so I have my modem and router downstairs which provides wireless coverage for most that.  Then I installed a cable that ran (all hidden) to my office on the 1st floor and stuck a switch there for my PC so it is hardwired, then I added a AP and that has sorted the issue.

They are ok but hardwired is the way if Pen you have ability if you are still having work done get some cables run in to you house mate :)

Agreed. I just want to use hardwired cabling tbh.

I really need it to go modem -> switch -> router to complete what I have in mind.

Would this work and any thoughts on the products?

Not sure but I suspect that would result in -
1. No dhcp at the switch so you'd need to hard wire ip addresses.
2. Anything connected to the switch is outside the router firewall so treated as external by the devices connected to the router.
No experience of that particular router but I do have an older model Asus router and I'm quite happy with it. About 5 years old now but I still got a firmware update recently.

The first router has a few more technical toys like link aggregation - something you'll probably never have to use.

Just to confirm, you want to connect your broadband modem to a switch, then feed an ethernet cable to another router for wireless access?
Do you require ethernet connections at the router end as well as wireless or just wireless?

Your component choices are OK, I'd suggest the router a little on the expensive side depending what you want to use it for. The small unmanaged switch is fine, but you can get bigger versions for similar money that may give you some more options later in the future should you require them.

For wireless only I'd recommend a UniFi AP as they're relatively inexpensive and powerful compared to a standard consumer wireless router.

THanks all.

No, I don't need to have ethernet connections from the router if I'm using a switch.

I guess if I try the moden > Router first to see if the wifi signal is strong enough and then come up with another solution if I have to.

From what you're all saying the modem>switch>Router isn't the best option.

I thought the router was pretty expensive which was why I wondered if it's worth the premium?

Yes you can but its inefficient if more than one item is connected to the switch. Data will be going from your modem to your router (LAN gateway) before potentially continuing back down the path is came from. Your also sending the data back and forth down the same path each time so you have a bottleneck if the switch contains more than one device for example.

Normally all network devices will just keep a routing table (path) to a single gateway device (your router) and route all traffic to this device as it contains all paths or routing tables to get to all other devices.

A smart switch can solve this issue or another router if your happy to configure one router in AP only mode for your WIFI. Ethernet router routing just after your your modem where the switch is.

modem --------> router 1 with PC's attached (no wifi only eithernet) -----------> Access point (Router in AP mode or AP)

Then you preserve a decent topology for your network and don't have some weird back echo between your gateways each time a computer wants to access the internet or another machine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks All.

So i'm returning my router as I don't think it's as good as advertised. The wifi seems no better than my bt home hub and for the price doesn't justify it.

Now looking for a replacement wifi router to replace it with. The  DrayTek Vigor 130 seems OK so it's just a new decent wifi router I need. If I need more coverage then I'll go back to using extenders.

Thanks

Tutonic

I've actually found the BT Hub (with a Plusnet logo slapped on it) to be a very capable router - with some impressive Wifi coverage.

Billion routers are excellent, if you're going to shop around - they are generally feature packed but quite pricey if you don't need the extra functionality.

Thanks Tut. Any particular one ? I have a modem as I mentioned so it just needs to be a router and doesn't need the modem part although I don't mind having that if it helps.

Thanks
