I found out the problem with my AIW 9800 SE GC:

Test result:  CPU does not support MMX.

Explanation:  If your CPU does not support MMX, Multimedia Center performance will be very limited. DVD, TV-ON-DEMANDâ,,¢, and MPEG capture will not function.

Recommendation:  You will need to upgrade your CPU if it does not support MMX. A PIII 600 or equivalent is the recommended minimum.

Confused im running on a: amd athlon xp running at 2000mhz
motherboard is: jetway polaris 400/v400da/v400dap/v400daz
chipset: via vt8377 apollo kt400
memory: 1280mb

I was just wondering if anyone could help me out?
Im currently trying to look around to see if this actually the fault or if my cpu/mb doesnt support this gc. As currently im unavailable to use the extra features of the gc ie the tv card the remote etc etc. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance...

The RAM won't affect it, the CPU does support MMX, so it's your mobo or the 9800SE itself that is causing the problems.  But if the gfx card performs well in other areas then it may be the mobo.

Try swapping the gfx card out to another machine with a mainstream brand mobo and MMX cpu.  See if the gfx card works in that, if it does then you have identified your mobo as the problem.

Also, might be worth a quick check in BIOS to make sure that you don;t have a facility whereby you can disable MMX?  I can't remember such an option in BIOS myself, but you never know.............

Cheers for the suggestions tl i will try out your ideas and see if it is my mobo

OldBloke

It's a known bug (ATI blame MS).

The solution is on the ATI webby (a link to a MS patch). I'll see if I can refind it (had to do my 9800se before the TV functions worked).

I think it is your mobo mate. This is my processor: AMD Athlon™ XP 2800+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz. Since you said you got a processor from AMD Athlon running @ 2.0GHz it must support it since my old AMD Athlon XP 2000+ also supported MMX while that one ran @ 1667MHz.

Go to your start menu and choose 'RUN' then in the box type 'DXDIAG' and press enter. Then your DirectX menu will pop up and on the first page you see all kinda hardware information. Find your processor and look if the text is the same as mine (AMD Athlon™ XP 2800+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz), if there is MMX then it is defo your mobo!!

Succes!

I've got a Gigabyte 7N400 Pro 2. It rox hard. Very stable, never had any form of crashes with it, while it is very fast too!! And there is a nice cooler on the AGP block unit too!! Not to pricey, but very good, believe me!!! Check mine HERE!!

I copy that on the Abit NF7-S v2.0.  It roxors and took my XP1700 to XP3400 territory in April last year where it has remained ever since, rock solid :D

Lo DA,
Biggest problem I see from customers ,is when they try and fit amd cpu. What you have to remember is to keep H/S paralell with cpu core as you fit the H/S.DO NOT under any circumstances let the H/S rock on the cpu core, this causes damage in the form of little chips out of the core and leads to instability and or total failure. Its by no means rocket science(I know this coz I can do it :) )just a moderate use of common sense.Take your time and you will sail through it. ;)
