Dr Sadako

This post is a guideline of how PCS (Professional CS, started summer of 2000) was played before it was converted to TCS (Tactical CS, Jan 2004). The marked areas in the images below of well known maps are the places the defending team were allowed to go to be close to the objectives.

If you are unsure of how to play TCS look at these and you will know the basic "right and wrong". All maps in the rotation aren't here though. See it as a guideline and apply common sense for the other maps. If you are "out of bounds" you will be told so by the veterans. Rule of thumb is "stay close to the objective" and you are never wrong.

Waaaaay back in 2000 Apophis made this post on the usenet newsgroup alt.games.half-life.counterstrike where I was a frequent reader. That post was the birth of PCS. I read the message and the same night I started playing what come to evolve into PCS which in turn evolved to TCS.

Back then It was early versions of CS without built in voice communications so Roger Wilco and similar VoIP programs were used. On N42 I met up with albert, Benny, BigFatCat with the stunning clan tag [WAS], squ0nk, ninja_freak and pendragon (Penfold now) to name a few, all UK based players. As the server usually filled up 7 pm US east coast time it meant regularly playing until 3,4,5, and 6 GMT in the morning.

dMw adopted PCS and I started playing at MeatHook at better times of the day.

Back then the rotation on N42 the rotation was huge. 40-50 maps was quite common. At that time "no entry signs" weren't available so you had to learn the boundaries by heart.

Some old classic maps in PCS were for example cs_alpin/cs_alpin02 where Ts were holding a house up in the alps. Boxoffice was another hostage map where Ts were holding a movie theatre. I bet everyone remembers the corridors with the movie posters. One of my personal favorite maps were cs_shogun which later was released with even better graphics and detail. The combination of sniping and close quarter combat made this map really good in PCS mode.
When it comes to bomb maps one favorite of mine was de_52costadelsol which is a very tight close combat type of map much like rio. Multiple routes and lots of possibilities for cunning tactics.
de_deep immediately became a favorite among the regulars and I can't count the times I fell off that bloody ladder between sites. Later on 3D mikes classic map de_predator was added and falling off trees were standard on this map. Anyone being killed by the trip wires? :roflmao: Stíll it was a very good PCS map and I would love to see this map as a Source adaptation.
Finally I want to shortly mention THE map I remeber the most from the beginning of PCS. Yes, it is roadhouse. At the time it personified PCS for me. It was a extremely difficult map for CT unless you played as a team and timed your attacks. It seemed that every deciding round revolved around the_toilet_block or the tunnel. I also remember that Ts regularly had meetings in the trailer before attacking.

Other maps to remember would be as_risingsun, cs_tibet, cs_drugwar, cs_highsociety, cs_thunder, de_bitterwine and de deadlock (HADO KING!).

I was reminded by Squ0nk about the N42 vs dMw scrim on roadhouse. Anyone still have screenshots of that? If I remember correctly we kicked their asses.

Gone_Away

OMG. Box office!! I haven't thought about that map in ages.. Super shotty map. esp in the theater itself..

I remember playing on N42 on dialup and then single ISDN (64k).. The pings were horrible but the gameplay and drunken fun are something that I will always remember.

Yes we did kick their asses.. Don't have screen shots but I do recall the can of whoop-ass that we opened. :)

Those were the days and while I think some of the fun is lost down to enforcement of the rules of TCS I think that this is just a phase that we're in..

A lot of the new folks here are crack-shots but need to internalise what TCS means to the point where it comes natural opposed to having to think about it. Hopefully one day we'll get back to just having a laugh and not having to worry about enforcing the TCS rules to every frag-hunter that comes on the server..

The structure in place is a testament to the efforts of the long-standing members of this community and all the new folks should be aware of this and appreciate it.

We have some really excellent new-blood on the servers and it's good to see the hook busy during the week as well.

Shoot ya later.. Well done Sadako and Co..

This reminds me about when I stumbled on -=[dMw]=-.
I was in the clan [CIGS] but Slowhand (where's that guy lately???) showed me the way towards -=[dMw]=- as he knew I'd be interested in TCS.
I'm still enjoying it so far. Lots of LAN's/Tournaments and such. :crying:

Mats, check this site; http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
Maybe you can find the old forums again.

Also a good interview someone from [TG] had with Apophis;

Maybe another match versus "N42"/[TG] might be interesting?
I reckon Apophis will be up for some revenge.

For the rest; :dmw:

Some great memories there ...I was led to N42 by Pen who I had meet at AOKCC (age of Kings gaming club) and on N42 I meet Benny and a few others not to mention some Swedish git
Then eventually ending up at dMw with the rest
Would be great to find some of the old maps and get to play them again.

Spent many a drunken Night on the dMw servers with Smite/jas/sad/OB/tl/fb/ben etc etc
ahhh the memories!:D
Me,I\'m just a lawnmower - you can tell me by the way I walk.

Dr Sadako

I remember when I first started playing PCS on dMw and got yelled at by SmiteThee for breaking the rules on dust2. The PCS rules on N42 and dMw where slightly different on many maps. So what I had done was to run from short A to long A through T double doors when bomb was down which was allowed on N42 but not on dMw. Yup lots of stuff to memorize.

I wasn't around in the old days but i was around with Duvel in Cigs. Duvel introduced me to dmw and the rest is just history. I love going to the lans and like duvel i like talking to others about their past gaming experiences. Ninja and i have had alot of chats about n42 and co and i just wish i was playing back then. I have the original 1.0 so we could play that i suppose but i think it is still possible to play 1.5 as a mod for half-life but i am not too sure how to sort it out.
