I'm a big Dune fan, so I'm looking forward to this - in a scary sort of "they'll either ruin it or make it as good as the book" kind of way!  Either way, I'll go to see it when it comes out.....assuming any cinemas are still open by 18 December 2020.

I never knew they had this in the pipeline. What do you think of the original movie? That had a hell of a good cast.

When I was a kid, well 11 to be accurate, it was everyones wow movie. The books were all over school, couldn't get enough of them. I never realised until recently they were from the 1960s.

Dune is one of my favourite movies.   You have to ignore the cheesy effects and some clunky scenery, I just love the book story being portrayed on the screen.   And that's the key imho, if you have read the book the movie makes so much more sense and you 'get' the film, if you haven't read the book then the movie makes a lot less sense and the viewer misses out on so much.  I think the casting in the first movie was inspired for most part, they have some great actors in the credits, I just hope they do as good a job in this remake.  I'm slightly worried that they'll do a "The Day The Earth Stood Still' and take an excellent low budget original and remake it into a high budget 'direct to TV' flop.

Have you ever followed the books through to the end?  The story of the 'Duniverse' is a fun read when you go through the books in plot chronological order.  The darker stuff in later books is as engaging as the original book, very much like Ender's Game, where the whole 'speaker' story line laid out int he following books adds so much more to the story.

I read the very first 2 novels that were published but I've no recollection of the detail. I should reread them.

Although from a bit of wiki interrogation, the Chronological order is way different to the release order. Legends of Dune and Great Schools of Dune are the earliest in the actual series chronology. Then there are Preludes. Finally the original in The Rise of the Atreides.

24 books in all.

A lot of the prequels can be skipped and read solo, but I would recommend reading from Dune onwards, particularly the ones written by Frank Herbert himself, something like the below order.   Anything else starts to become a supplemental read.

Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune

I re-watched the original movie a few weeks ago in preperation for the new movie. Can not wait, honestly.

add to that Denis Villeneuve is one of my favourite directors i'm sure this will be special.

If Dune is crap it will be a first for him.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Yeah, I'm excited more from the director's past work, and now the trailer. Dune was 'before my time' so I'm going into it blind. Probably I will watch the original after this one, I enjoted that with Blade Runner.

Do yourself a favour, before you watch either movie, read the book.  It's worth it.

I'm 30 pages in and engrossed.

I read Dune way back when I totally wasn't ready for it - I think I was a teenager still and my dad had a few of the Dune books on his shelves. I'm definitely looking to re-read at least Dune itself, sooner rather than later, before watching this new movie.
I've not seen the original 1984 movie - is it worth watching? Before or after reading the book?

Also - where'd you guys get your copies from? Either physical or ebook works :)

albert

Bump, released yesterday. Any fanboys been to the cinema yet?

Watched it last week.  Its fantastic, they didn't rush it and went through a lot of detail.

Can't wait for part 2, even if I know the story...

There's a six episode mini series from the early 2000's which is also a good watch ;)
Guild Wars 2 - Characters: Dragelis / Estril / Viliona
Battle.net - LydonB#2167
Warframe - LydonB
