Go into OFFLINE mode if you cant connect to the internet, then join any server ... worked for me. I am on CoFR right now.

Thanks should help some people... But now I cannot get into OFFLINE mode as I exited steam the wrong way, tried rebooting but did not help. Is there a file that I could try deleting ?

Dr Sadako

What I did

1. started steam
2. selected offline mode when it didn't connect
3. started CS
4. connected to an internet server
5. played CS :)

Ok what i think they have done is made to directories for steam offline play which works on or off line and online. This means the steam network can still run when online goes down as //www.steampowered.com isn't working again for some reason

I think something went wrong somewhere along the line, going re-install cs1.6 and then try and connect. Let you guys know if it helps at all.....

GhostMjr

Tip put all ur fav servers in favourites as u can still run them even when this happens otherwise u can't play any servers!!

this is very great

Got a other update from steam and directly after that my windows is giving reports from file damaged etc

And now i start up steam and it says that there is already 1 version running but there isn't

Snah

If you restart your pc do you still get an error message saying file damaged. And if you go to task manager you can close down the steam.exe process. Let me know...

How do you "start CS" once in offline mode? My copy of steam keeps throwing back the message that "this game is not ready to be played in offline mode"

I was having the same problem.
-shutdown steam by right clicking the steam icon in start-up and clicking exit.
-Delete blob file from steam folder
-Restart steam
-Worked a treat
-And it installed a great hack that makes you not miss ;)

suicidal_monkey

so we noticed!!!

hehe. steam updated something after I made that post and was working! :D
