I'm going to a pre-screening of Troy this Sunday morning at 10am, which is a scarey time for a Sunday. Means I'll have to be up about 8am

So watch this space for one of my waffles. And an epic movie will probably result in an epic waffle so be warned  <_<

Well Wolfgang Petersen have done some good stuff before but I must say I have my doubts about this one. Why f**k up a a perfectly good story that have been working for a few thousand years ...  <_<

Pre-release views say Pitt can't carry it the way Crowe carried Gladiator.  And it's not just his awful faux-RADA accent.

The gods get virtually no mention - I know it would have been hard to do but it's central to the Iliad.

Odysseus (Bean) apparently gets virtually no screen time and Achilleus and Patroklus' "friendship" is severely "underplayed" (surprise surprise Hollwood  <_<  )

Everything I've heard says it ain't gonna be another Gladiator, but that Cox, O'Toole, and Banna save it from being a disaster.

They shouldn't have messed with a classic story though for the sake of making it "dumbed down" - after all it is the first major piece of western literature ever written, and Gladiator, Ben Hur, and Spartacus didn't need to do it  <_<

Still, I'll be going to see it given how good the trailers look.  What a sucker I am  :)

p.s. is it just me but in the Iliad the Trojan Horse and Achilleus' end isn't in the book (and isn't in The Odyssey either?)  I thought it happened in another poem.  Not sure.
If I wanted you to understand I would have explained it better

I'll hold back from writing a review until I've actually seen it  ;)

I suddenly can't be bothered to write anything much about this film.....much like the writer, director and actors couldn't be bothered to read the source material for the story they were using.

It's a big cgi-fest of a film with nothing very remarkable about any of it.  It will eat up a couple and half hours of your time and in a week you'll have forgotten that you saw it. So, just like most Hollywood fodder really.

Of course it could have been so much better. With a different writer and director and some adventurous producers we might have had something really epic on our hands that did justice to Homers Illiad. Sadly all we got was Hollywood playing it safe and creating audiences of moderately entertained people  :(

I'm with Smilo on this one - watched it this afternoon and am bitterly disappointed.

To treat arguably the most important piece of literature ever written in such a shabby, dumbed-down way has made me pretty pi$$ed off at the moment.

Bana is the only one for me who comes out of this with any credibility.  Pitt is just wooden, Bean is criminally under-used, and, most sadly of all, Cox is just totally overplaying the part.

They must have mentioned Achilleus' motivation for fighting like 10 times in the film - thanks for treating me with some intelligence Wolfgang, but I got the message the first time.  The hammy script was just cringingly bad.

The fighting didn't egage - impressive when they're all lining up, but it just decends into a big rugby scrum.  The New Forest fight in Gladiator or LOTR Helms Deep did it much better.

I was hoping this would challenge Ridley Scott's excellent Gladiator - sadly it never even got close on any count  :(

At least if they do the sequel we'll get to see more of Sean Bean  ;)

.............................well I must say it was a fabulous film, deeply touching, moralistic and a very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

Wolfgang (he lets me call him that  )  was at his most sublime with an adaptation that was both touching and moving.

Forget his previous works...this is, and will be, remembered,m as his "piece de resistance"

A film for all the family, a film that brings the GODS to LIFE, a film that you must not miss!!

Some "anally retentive" reviewers might slate it but people, trust me on this  , you have not seen a movie until you have seen TROY.

Pitt is majestic, Bean plays a bit part that suits his acting style and Cox is superb!!!!!!!

tHERE'S BLOOD A'PLENTY FOR ALL AND A NICE WARM FEELING INSIDE WHEN YOU LEAVE THE CINEMA.

......out to buy on DVD soon :D  :D  :D  :D

A Twig

from various people i've spoken too, all their opinions vary around two main PoV:

"Troy was good, but thats purely because i was expecting it to be crap, and it suprised me"

 OR

"I thought it was going to be amazing, but in the end it was a disappointment"

So the answer is, go and see it, not expecting much, and you may well come out pleasantly suprised! :D

Dingo you really must stop doing this.  While I can see the subtle and sophisticated wit underlying your seemingly genuine post, others who do not know you so well, might not see the viperous sarcasm that underscores your comments. This might lead them to think you actually liked this film. Based on that incorrect assumption they might decide to go and see it. You would therefore be responsible for wasting their evening and money.

Although the
QuoteWolfgang (he lets me call him that ) was at his most sublime with an adaptation that was both touching and moving
line should have been the clue it was burried too deep.  I'll admit the
QuotePitt is majestic
line was more obvious and actually very funny.

I suggest you litter your sarcasm posts with a few more  ;)  so as to make sure you don't lead others astray.
