Definatly going to be big in the future if they can sort out the lag issues.

Basicly its this. Two teams, Marines + Aliens, the objective is to destroy the other team's base station (Marines have a Command Console, Aliens have a big fat Hive thing). Marines have a Commander who uses the Command Console, he gets a top down view of the entire map, and he can place down structures for Marines to build (Ammo Dispensers, Automated Turrets etc), drop ammo, weapons and equipment onto the map for Marines to use. Aliens can "evolve" into different species, one of which is a builder drone that can build buildings. All these things require "resource points" which are obtained by building Resource Towers on certain points in the map. Marines have a central resource pool which the commander controls, each Alien has its own resource's to use (as more towers are built, each Alien has more resources to use, and points recharge faster). Oh, and you get to kill lots of stuff.

It sounds really complicated, but its the best teamplay mod I've played in ages, everyone needs to download this :)

I watched Frenzy playing this earlier and it appears to suck when you play on the alien team.

totally agree this mod is amazing when you play with clever folk who understand whats happening. unfortunately , early on many people complained that the alien side was underpowered when in fact they were fine , you just needed to play them slightly different from the marines. these complaints led to the makers of the mod enhancing the alien side a little, and making marine weapons less powerful and now it is a little unfair on the marines. even with these slight niggles, with the right guys   ( basically about 6 people i met on the same server who know what they're doing ) we can win as either marine or alien thanks to our spanky special tactics :D

and voice comm is pretty much essential unless you type super fast  :o|:

Sounds like an FPS version of the classic and sadly utterly flopped MS game "Allegiance".  Allegiance was a space/flight sim-come-RTS, which was utterly revolutionary and extremely enjoyable to play.  Microsoft killed it because, after a very successful public beta, they failed utterly to advertise or promote the game and charged for the use of decent servers.

Allegiance had four or five factions though.

Sheepy appears and begins to stroke my head. According to his slurred drunken speech I am "lovely and like a fuzzy felt". Thankfully he soon leaves and passes out somewhere. [/quote]

Not me :)  Did PC Gamer have a feature on Allegiance then?

Allegiance has been rescued to a certain extent by a dedicated (but sadly rather small) community of players and programmers - they've brought out their own patches and servers and all - but it's still a rather obscure corner of the gaming world.

But hey, I was never much good at it anyway :)

Great game though.

(edit: if anyone's interested, the main Allegiance community gateway site is http://www.alleg.net/ )

I saw quite a few people playing it at i10 and i12 but I couldn't be bothered to try and learn how to play it (looked super complicated, and I didn't have a joystick :( )

Natural Selection and Battlefield 1942 are gonna be my games of choice at the next lan :)

N42 have a Natural Selection server up at the moment, still public I think. I tried it, but I thinik I need some lessons, I got a bit pissed at appearing then getting leg humped by an angry looking alien, whilst Diana Krall sung sweet nothings in my ear...

I installed it, but ever since Gandalf mentioned needing that Valve Steam download manager to get the next CS update, and me installing it (and subsequestly getting rid of it cause it's crap!) I can't get any of my HL mods to work. CS works through HLSW only which is fine, but I need to reinstall before trying this, but it does look too complicated for a nice relaxing evening shooting people (or aliens), or humping legs as Benny points out.
Cheers, Bert
