HI-VELOCITY UPDATE:

Just spoke to Ant again.  The cutover to the newly configured  hardware did not solve all of the issues so it has been extracted and they will be having another go at a cutover to it again tomorrow morning.

Hi-V changed some of the configuration settings (inc MTU) at 06:00hrs this morning and we await their report on the impact of these changes.

As far as I can tell from PingPlotter this has dropped my minimum ping back down to normal levels (15ms) but the ping still spikes upwards occassionally so clearly there is more work to do.  We await further feedback.

Speed / Ping Issues Update 07/01/2005 20:00

Antho writes "Following another full day on site with our carrier the situation is now as follows.

There are 2 network upgrades / card changes planned, the first of these will take place at 5am tomorrow (Saturday 8th January). This should alleviate issues for certain users.

The second cannot be carried out until 11am Monday 10th Jan due to a needed part not arriving with us until 9am Monday.

This should see user issues resolved.

As a precaution I have also today requested the MAC codes for the 600 or so affected users, I will have these by Wednesday 12th Jan, so should we need to, we can start the migration process.

We appologise for the lack of information today, and that this issue will not be resolved in time to give you all the weekend surfing experience that you crave and deserve. We will update you tomorrow with the result of tomorrow mornings work then again on Monday. Once again we would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding.

Antho writes "There will be a series of outages this afternoon (no more that 5 and for no longer than 3 minutes each) As we move all customers over to the new fibre which has now been run. Speed / Ping Issues Update 10/01/2005 18.20

Antho writes "Our first planned upgrade (the Gig fibre link) to our carrier, has not gone to plan. The fibre was run and is fine, however there was an issue with our Foundry Bigiron 15000 switch communicating with our carriers Cisco switch. This is not something that we have seen happen before and therefore was completely unexpected. We have logged the issue with Foundry and expect their feedback tonight. Depending on the feedback received and the time that we receive it, we may re attempt this upgrade tonight. Failing that it will be tomorrow morning. The second phase of our planned upgrade at our end will go ahead within the next hour and will result in 2 minutes downtime across the entire platform. This however on its own will not resolve the speed / ping issues.

Based on the feedback from Foundry and the upgrade going ahead on our carrier link in the next 24hrs we will then, if necessary start the migration process.

QuotePing / Speed Issues Update 12/01/05 19:55

Antho writes "Firstly my appologies for the delay in updating you. For the last two days we have been close to having the full news, however we didn't want to announce anything before we had a solution in place with our carrier.

We can confirm that a fully working solution is due to be in place by this coming Friday. This is a process that Hi-Velocity have been heavily involved with.

We have upgraded numerous parts of our network over the last week with severeal new fibre links going into place, in an attempt to alleviate packet loss/ping/speed issues. Once all this was complete and we had proven that our network was in no way at fault our carrier escalated the problem further within BT. It would appear that their BT Central Pipe capacity was running at maximum (maxing out from about 11am most days). This was particulary unusual as their Central Pipes were running at 1/3rd of the BT recommended number of users.

A New STM4 (622 Mbps BT Central Pipe) is due next month. In the interim Hi-Velocity have been instrumental in negotiating a deal whereby our affected carrier will lease some BT Central Pipe capacity from another of our platform providers. We will be handing this off to our carrier across our fibre network backbone. Traffic will immediately be loadbalanced across this extra BT Central Pipe capacity, giving plenty of headroom whislt we wait for BT to complete installation of the new STM4.

We have had to wait until now to deliver the full verdict and fix as this is a complex commercial and technical solution.

Whilst we did state that we would commence migrations of affected customers it became clear that this process would take longer than the proposed fix, and would therefore have proved worthless. We came to a decision that it was in the best interest of our customers to pursue this resolve.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to Friday as I am sure you all will!
