Introduction

Ebay has grown over many years from a small site to now one of the most popular bidding sites and well known in the world. The trouble is not many people know how to use it and I hope That my guide give some incite into how to use eBay safely and successfully to gain high quality goods at a low price.

Is eBay safe?

I have to be honest and say eBay is open to crime etc with criminals who are able to make an account and within a few days receive money from a user. I myself have been a victim of crime once and almost twice on eBay. Later I was told on contacting the police that I can never ask for their support for a matter on eBay as they will no longer cover fraud as it is a centre for a huge worldwide scandal that have many hundreds of people to sell goods that do not exist so they can con others into easy money as some would call it.

What is feedback?

So to begin with always make sure the user has feedback this is other users giving their opinion on the service that the seller or buyer received on purchasing the product. The seller or buyer can then leave feedback on their experience as well! This feedback can either be left as positive negative or neutral. Positive opinions, negative opinions and neutral opinions for ambivalent comments. You must look out for all three of these as these should be the basis of your decision to buy or sell to the user.
If the user has recently received negative feedback don’t automatically discount the product but decide whether it was for a valid reason e.g. refused refund etc. Sometimes buyers or sellers do post feedback that is nasty to people who did honestly try their best and did fail but you must not discount if they had a virus or was too busy to help you. However if user post for example the words ‘scam’ or beware make note and steer clear. For example my user name is

ghostmjr (24) http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/uk/icon...wStar_25x25.gif

The best course of action is to see if the user has any feedback at all? As I have you can see a number beside my name in brackets. There is a star showing that I have had over 20 feedback comments. This simply means 20 people or more have left feedback for my account. To see if my feedback is positive or not you can either click the name of the person or the number beside the username. This will display a screen with all their feedback that has ever been received. You can sort this by whether it is from buyers or sellers. It makes sense therefore to be cautious of sellers who have no feedback for selling feedback to buyers. Now you can view the feedback the plus sign means positive, the red minus a negative comment and finally a round grey circle for neutral.

Safety Tips for buying

Lastly be careful of the seller or buyer posting feedback about themselves as this is usually a scam. Sometimes users can post multiple feedbacks make sure they are all valid. Finally make sure the user has been active as dormant accounts can be used for scams! If there is no answer steer clear and buy from someone else!
In all only buy from sellers who have feedback. Any sellers who have (0) means they have never sold an item before. This does put a lot of trust in the seller and sometimes they do not live up to their promise. I have seen on countless occasions’ people who have bought from these sellers with bids of £1000 and over. Simply look out for positive feedback and even power seller logos to show they are approved sellers of eBay. Many people run their businesses from eBay and have exceptional feedback so always watch out for them. These can be power sellers. Look out for if they are verified and whether they have standard or pay pal buyer protection which goes up to £500.

There are buyer protection schemes that eBay use and these are listed below:

1. PayPal Buyer Protection - When you pay for a qualified listing with PayPal, this programme provides coverage up to £500.00 at no additional cost. To see if an item is covered, look for the following picture in the "seller information" section on the listing and confirm the item's eligibility.

2. Standard Purchase Protection Programme - Most other items are covered up to £120.00 (minus a £15.00 processing fee) under the Standard Purchase Protection Programme.

Buyer protection explanation

What payments can I use?

Well there are many types of payment cheque, postal order and paypal. For those of you not familiar with paypal I suggest you head over to paypal.com and make an account!

Conclusion

In my opinion eBay is a good marketplace and I have found some very good bargains. I have saved hundreds of pounds but you must make sure you buy safely. You are in control not the seller and you dictate whether it sells or not. I hope this guide has been useful and hope you find some cheap purchase on eBay.co.uk

I'm looking for a cheapo PC to run Linux on also. I've got some bargains from computer fairs in the past, so it might be worth checking the local rag for future events in your area  :)

Good post.  Been using ebay over the last few years, no complaints, however I scout out what I'm looking at ahead of time, who the seller is and try to make myself as aware as possible.  When selling, I try to cover all of the bases when describing the item, even if it is describing a dent or torn page, as it'll do me no good later on if the buyer decides I put something up w/ill intention.

The system is perfect, but if you keep your ahead about you, it is a great thing.  My uncle is a power seller on eBay and does 75% of his business there moving antiques.  He's got good stories and horror stories, but he's moving items that are above what the average ebayer is out looking for.

Spare parts?  Great place to check :)
