I'm pretty sure there's no Linux server out yet.

The info below is lifted from CS Central ...

We're looking for people who would like to run Win32 dedicated servers for the Steam Beta we're planning to roll out later today. This beta release will include Counter-Strike 1.6, the latest version of Team Fortress Classic (which includes the new teleporter the Engineer can build), Half-Life Deathmatch, Ricochet, Deathmatch Classic, and Opposing Force.

We don't have a Linux dedicated server package yet. We'll send more information about this when we're ready. If you're interested in getting the Win32 dedicated server package and running a server, you can sign up for the mailing list here:
http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/steam

Once we're ready for you to start grabbing the files, we'll send information to the Steam mailing list. Let me know if you have any questions.

Maybe this explains the ultr long d/l times

Well it appears that some last minute changes have been made, and Valve Software is not releasing the Steam 2.0 / Counter-Strike 1.6 client this evening after all. Obviously there are a number of leaked clients floating around out there although people arent really having much luck with them.

Steam Beta 2.0 Admission Suspended : The Counter-Strike and Team Fortress communities have maxed out the Steam 2.0 beta servers, resulting in the temporarily suspension of admission to the beta as more content servers are put online. The current Steam content servers offer over 500 megabits of bandwidth, all of which the community is consuming right now. Anyone interested in hosting a Steam content server should email biz@steampowered.com. (Content server requirements can be found at //www.steampowered.com Those who have already joined the beta are encouraged to continue their participation and submit their feedback.

The file was never even made official and we were never given the green light to put the client out on Fileshack, you can thank the gaming press for leaking it out early. I suppose if just a leak was enough to max out the servers, an actual official release would have just been ugly.

QuoteWe could ask that nice Mr. Blueball if we could use his server for testing 1.6.  :D

Already mentioned it, to quote "I'm not touching the beta with a barge poll, it's taken long enough to get 1.5 the way I want it"

I may do a bit of a beta server build myself but I should really be studying for my CCIE exam just now, not playing Linux admin.

Good luck with the CCIE, its not nice, when have you got yours?

June mate, it has crept back from October 2002 to June 2003, I am not interested, really need some motivation. No perks in getting an exam like that with the market in its current state. My company already have hundreds of CCIEs too and don't reward too well for getting it any more.

How about you, when's yours? Which Cisco office are you at. my missus works for em too.
Cheers, Bert

oh sorry for being so stupid

"Steam 2.0 BETA has been delayed until VALVe can muster up some more bandwidth. The program allows players to access the Counter-Strike 1.6 BETA. It was scheduled to go live earlier today, but many players downloaded early releases of the program and eventually VALVe realized their bandwidth simply couldn't handle the load."

It has been delayed in so far as no more new login account are to created for now. I got in there quickly and got CS1.6 downloaded and I am now getting HL. But I'm damned if CS will load. Fortunately CS1.5 works as normal  8)

GL with it GFK - and Hiya!  Another MK (sort of) person  :D

My brother spent some time in the US last year and did the CIPxx exams.  It's no fun with the studying, so good luck for it.  From memory I think the ones he did were:

CIPTSS - Cisco IP Telephony Solutions Specialist
CIPTOS - Cisco IP Telephony Operations Specialist
CIPTDS - Cisco IP Telephony Distribution Specialist

If I got those wrong them I apologise to anyone who knows the real initials!

I dont think it is crap software. I just thnik that they have underestimated the bandwidth usage. To be honest, If they are going to go down this route then:

1. Everyone needs broadband
2. They need to offer more, faster and better connected servers
3. i'll still find something to grumble about :)

after playing 1.6 beta online a few times i would say its good  8)

I'll leave my CS1.6 server running all day for anyone who wants a go.
Password is same as Meat Hook.

213.152.32.253:27015 is the IP/ port combo.

I'll idle there myself too.
