thats just what i have heard tho

I just downloaded Steam v2.0. It's not on the US sites yet or the UK sites but I got it from a German site. Here's it is if anyone wants it:

//www.sonnet.eclipse.co.uk/steaminstall.exe

I installed it and once installed it startes connecting to the Steam server to update some files, but it must be pretty congested at the moment so it's taking a while.

Although I managed to get the Steam 2.0 installed early yesterday evening (thankyou CS Central for a working link) I've only just managed to get the thing to connect to a server. I've double-clicked the 'Counterstrike' link and a little box now tells me that my game will be ready to play in 247 minutes  :(

Yep sounds familliar, I got a connection at 08:30 this morning and now have 45 mins 21 secs left download time.

I got the software last night but I couldn't even get a server response so gave up. It worked this morning straight away but to hell with broadband requirements, I could be using a modem and get a better download.

Do I hear you say but it's the first day of launch, yeah my answer to that is it is always the launch date when we will actually want to use the steam so unless they expand their content network dramatically, CS will be taking 4 hours to download every time there is an update. Apparently they push updates out to user so if they have any sense at all they will schedule them carefully to avoid this congestion. 42 mins 20 secs now. Ooo I could crush a grape.

Nah, I'm ok, but slow when I want to spell the correctly (not teh   ) There download clock was botched.

ANYWAY GOOD NEWS!!!!!

Steam with CS 1.6 does not over write your old CS directory at all!!!!!

A new cstrike directory is downloaded and used only when steam is your gateway onto the CS 1.6 servers!

Only problem is getting onto a server, I've not managed it yet  :(

We could ask that nice Mr. Blueball if we could use his server for testing 1.6.  :D

Already mentioned it, to quote "I'm not touching the beta with a barge poll, it's taken long enough to get 1.5 the way I want it"

I may do a bit of a beta server build myself but I should really be studying for my CCIE exam just now, not playing Linux admin.

Given that I now know that 1.6 won't screw up my 1.5 install then why not :-) Of course you'll have to wait 3 years for me to get it downloaded and so far steam has screwed up 2 user accounts. I create an account, I log in. When I log out and try to log in again it says that either the account doesnt exist or the password is wrong!!! But "Remember my password" is ticked so how can it be!!!

I have tried unticking password memory bu it still loses account after one login. What KAK. :(

Yeah BB, I'm not sure how we go about getting a beta of the linus server binary. I've never used the windows version but it comes with the client doesn't it?

I see from the steam accounts window, you can subscribe to a dedicated server option, so I assume you get the normal start a server with the update but if you want to run a server yourself, dedicated you have to dl the update. Not sure how linux would work though.

If I were you I'd leave it alone    at least until they sort out the initial teathing problems like loggin in (ffs loggin in!).
